I have another question about toddlers. When out at a restaurant with a 2-3

yr old, do you let him/her choose? If he/she wants a cheeseburger and you get a cheeseburger for the child, what do you do if the child wants your food instead? Do you feed them your food and let them waste theirs or encourage them to eat their own?

When my kids were that age, I would always just order a little more than I planned on eating, and then ask for an extra plate. In most restaurants, I found it to be healthier than what was on the kids menu. It was also easier to get them to eat it because it came from the "grownup menu." I guess that made them feel special, lol! To further sweeten the deal, I'd often let them help me pick what "we" were going to order.

We occassionally eat out and take our two year old with us. What I found works when we go to restaurants is to ask before we go inside to you want to share with mommy and daddy OR do you want to order your own big kid food? Once that is established we go inside and get seated and order our drinks. Our two year old knows how to say what he wants and he gets three choices - milk, juice or tea. No pop, ever.
While we wait for that we go over the choices he has on the menu and give him the option of 2 that are on the kids menu if he wants his own that we know he'll eat "do you want mac n cheese or chicken" or "would you like pizza or a sandwich". His choices vary based on where we go of course. He knows that whatever food he has chosen he has to eat. He has to say please, thank you and wipe his hands and face on his napkin.

The restaurants that have balloons for kids are the best and worst, but for us we use the balloon as a bribe for him to eat good at the meal and to be polite. If he acts out (which is not often thankfully) he gets no balloon to take home. That happened only one time and now he cooperates, eats what he chose and is polite as a two year old can be. He always loves the end of the meal he goes to the bathroom with one of us and gets to pick a balloon (if the restaurant has them). Works like a charm.
