i am trying to hook up a rockford fosgate e11 amp.?

i bought sum subs the other day and the guy gave me an amp to go with it. the guy said he doesnt kno if it works or not but i wana find out if it does. i tried using a 8 gage 750 watt wire kit but i read that the amp is between 1200 and 1500 watts. do i need a bigger gage wire to power and ground it or is there any other way i can tell if the amp is any good? i really want this amp to work
