I am constantly reminded why Jimmy Hendrix is a GOD

His songs are amazingly intricate pieces of spontainious energy, rythm, and technicality. He can distort and twist his sound into anything he wants, bombarding his audience with a truely psychedelic musical experience.

It's funny because I've played guitar for over 10 years, and almost all the guitarrists that I like cite Jimi Hendrix as an influence, but for the life of me I cannot get into any of his stuff. I don't like his sound. I don't like his progressions. I don't like his technique. Maybe I'm just missing something.

Don't get me wrong, I respect him a lot as a guitarrist. I think he was awesome and influential and I give him props for doing his own thing. I just don't like listening to his music.

In my opinion there are three classes of music:
1. Music you like to listen to (obviously)
2. Music you don't enjoy listening to but still respect (people that are skilled, respectable, or influential in genres you don't personally like, but whose talent you can't deny, for example)
3. Music you don't like or respect (total shit)

I place Jimi in category 2.

You know what tho, I haven't listened to him in a while. Maybe I'll give it another try this weekend. I feel like there's something wrong with me as a guitarrist because I don't like his music.

So I'm not disagreeing with you that he's good. Now, if this was one of those posts that was like "omg the guy from White Stripes is the best guitarrist evAr!!1!1!1oneone!1!!" then it would be a different story

I will.

You know what? I'm a prog metal fan. So I usually end up arguing with Hendrix fans.

Them: Your music is all technique and has no feeling
Me: "Feeling?" You mean one holding one note and bending it for 4 measures?
Them: At least there's emotion in that.
Me: Emotion in prog metal is expressed through the progression of the song,
Them: Whatever, it's elitist wanking.
Me: At least it sounRAB good.
etc.

Fuck it. All guitar fans should just get along regardless of their genre of choice. I don't like Hendrix's music, but I still respect him. There's some prog metal I don't like, but I still respect that, too.

As long as we all hate the White Stripes, there should be no problem

You know what I mean. That's the typical definition of "feeling" in response to people who call highly technical stuff "emotionless wanking."

Go try to learn some Hendrix... I don't see much, holding one note for four measures. Hell, his songs seem to change everytime he played it.

Great description, I didn't truely understand everything that Jimi was trying to say until I started to injest certin psychedelic's. Still my one of my fav's.
