I'm 29 year old former Pitt student. The best way to learn is with self-education. You can still go to college doing this, it is called "unschooling". The thing to do is to unschool and then when you are 16 or 18, you can take a GED test and then apply to a college afterwards or just go to a community college and transfer to a university. Now as stated earlier I did go to Pitt but didn't hear about this till after I graduated from High School. Some will say you won't learn anything but if there is anything you need to learn you can always look it up. I'LL NEVER GET THESE 12 YEARS OF MY LIFE BACK AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO TO DIRECT MY ANGER TOWARDS. For every kid out there reading this, you're childhood is too important, so don't throw it away like I did.
Anyway here is a link for unschooling:

The public schools are set up to indoctrinate government propaganda. They say the Civil War was fought over slavery, no it was an issue till halfway through the war. Lincoln enacted an income tax and started conscription which are two things the foung fathers were against.
Public school is not free it paid for through taxes which means if you don't agree with you are still forced to pay for it.
As far as reading is concerned it is your responsibility to teach your kids
Another thing science is not really taught in school.Real science is testing and hypothesis based on observed occurences. Science teachers have their students read only out of a textbook and rarely do experiments which is what sceicne is all about and when they do experiments they are done only the way the text book states instead of doing it in ways to attempt refute the data to see if it upholds.
