wound up using my mitts as I would potholders. Why? Even though they are
insulated, I found that sometimes I could still feel the heat through them.
So by using both sides of them, I am further insulated.

I do have something that looks like some sort of animal head. Appears to be
silicone or something. Never used it yet. Bought it through daughter's
school as a fund raiser.

The pictured item is a potholder. I use potholders to take things
out of the oven all the time; my husband prefers mitts. Some people
use a dishtowel to take stuff out of the oven.

If I had the pocketed potholder that you have, I wouldn't try to
stick my hand inside. I'd just ignore the pocket.

I agree it's difficult to find manly oven mitts anymore. Ours
came with our All-Clad roasting pan.

Have you tried a hardware store? Not the bigbox, but
some local (maybe a franchise of Ace or TrueValue)

Why? I don't use mitts. I find them awkward and uncomfortable. We don't
even have any oven mitts anymore, just pot holders. As the name
suggests, they are great for holding pots.
