how to hook up a bettery?

i have a 96 ford explorer v6 andi hooked up the battery like i always do (negative first) and after i got it hooked up smoke started coming from wires behind the battery not the terminal aires littile ones started bubbling and basicly cooking so i ofcourse unhooked it wat is the deal did i do something wrong or wat

you connect positive first then negative
probably grounded the positive wire..
