Imagine a rectangular frame made of either 2X4's, 2X6's, or 2X8's, fastened together by something stable against moisture like big stainless screws or galvanized plumber's tape with galvanized nails into the tape. Just place the frame directly on the section of lawn you want to sacrifice. The absence of light once you fill the frame with primo planting mix, will kill the grass, and it will decay into time-release fertilizer. Fast and easy, one day installation. Easily removed "whenever", and grass seed thrown on the bare patch. The 4" high is plenty for every known garden plant, but higher may increase harvest on some plants. Arrange in not wider than 4 feet frames with access to both sides, to save your back.
