How to get the perfect vegetable garden?

Imagine a rectangular frame made of either 2X4's, 2X6's, or 2X8's, fastened together by something stable against moisture like big stainless screws or galvanized plumber's tape with galvanized nails into the tape. Just place the frame directly on the section of lawn you want to sacrifice. The absence of light once you fill the frame with primo planting mix, will kill the grass, and it will decay into time-release fertilizer. Fast and easy, one day installation. Easily removed "whenever", and grass seed thrown on the bare patch. The 4" high is plenty for every known garden plant, but higher may increase harvest on some plants. Arrange in not wider than 4 feet frames with access to both sides, to save your back.

I want to start a garden soon. Not just veggies but perhaps a few fruits as well. But I am unsure of where to begin? I live in the Mid-Atlantic region and our summers are long and humid. It does not begin to get cool until mid October here. Also, What type of soil should I use and what are some good, seeds to use, that will last?

Try reading the book "Spuare Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew. It's worked great for me - we have more home grown veggies than we can eat! I also visit gardenweb.com often, I get all of my questions answered on their forums and the people are very encouraging. Happy gardening!
