How music affects listeners mental health

If anything music has made me happier and more laid back as a person. When I'm down, I listen to some good music and maybe even sing along to it. :D

Listening to rap makes me wanna kill myself or other people, it p!$$3$ me off so much. Listening to metal , Black Metal puts me into a good mood.

Music evokes emotion, especially in the younger generation. These are the people who aren't fully developed, mentally. I'm not saying they're durab, or anything of the kind. They are simply still growing, forming their ideals and experiencing life's nasty little nuances.

Music is a refuge for young people who aren't quite sure where they fit in yet. It speaks to them directly, on a personal level. They can hide in it, and not be betrayed or hurt by it. Music is something a young person can trust, that's why, when they find something they identify with, they are fiercely loyal to it. It's their friend, and in some cases, their only friend.

As far as music affecting a person's emotional state, of course it does. In what manner, though, sometimes depenRAB on the person's emotional state before they even turned the stereo on. You can see several different examples of that in this thread alone. Everyone listens to music for different reasons.

Some people feel sad, so they play something that will make them feel better. Or, they will play something to intensify that feeling of sadness. It all depenRAB. Do I want to feel better? Or do I want to feed this sadness? Music has that power. It's all about the psyche. Whether it's conscious or not, I couldn't say.

Conversely, sometimes music takes control of your emotion, and there's nothing you can do about it. It directs your emotions. This usually happens unexpectedly. Sometimes that's good, and sometimes that's bad.

I can be brushing my teeth in the morning, and a song will come on that reminRAB me of a particularly bad time in my life, and it sticks with me all day. Music has that power.

Or, every time I hear any cut from The Cars' first album, and I wonder where Donna is now, 25 years later, if she still wears that perfume. Music has that power.

So, anyway, i guess I didn't really help. LOL. Just an old man rarabling.

Well, I listen to a range of music...when I listen to something heavier I always feel the music grabbing me and making me heavier. If something has pissed me off like I just had a fight with someone then I put some heavy music on and I can scream and throw **** around my room and just skitz in general. But I think music has alot to do with people's mental health...listen to soothing music? One's mind hall be clear of all torment...Listen to loud, heavy music? One shall have demons in their mind, hearing voices and wanting to seek a way to get out of hell....

Music doesnt effect me very much, if anything it makes me more relaxed some of the time. certain songs like many by dylan and even some by rage make me think of how ****ed up the government and society is kind of makes me mad but its not like im gonna go kill someone or blow up somethin

I listen to 70's hard rock like Zeppelin, Sabbath etcetera, and I don't do any drugs. I listen to metal and I don't worship the devil, so I guess thats something.

john lennon really influenced the way i look at people, like how everyone is equal and no one should discriminate ever. and beatles music, (mostly peppers and magical mystery) kinda nudged me to become a pacifist, songs like 'all you need is love' and 'revolution' (both types). because i admire them so much, i agreed with all the messages they were putting into their songs.

This topic is flawed because of stereotypes. Say you listen to emo, your immediatly going to be labelled as a wimpy, suicidal adolescent due to societies preconceptions - so its a case of self-fulfilling prophecy. If your treated and seen as this depressive, your going to react to their behaviour to fit their expections.

i personally think music is a catharsis . its a way in which we can safely release emotion. Of course the type of music and its lyrical content can alter a mood, but affect mental health in a more extensive manner? No, thats society.

I listen to Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, and i DON'T do drugs...So much for that "listening to artists that do drugs will make you want to do drugs" theory.

Meh, well i get in trouble at school alot but like not to do with suspensions or anything I intend to never do drugs or smoke but i will drink:D i reckon that rock soothes me more and when you're in a school filled with wannabee gangsters its good to be unique:)

i definately feel a little edgier when i listen to some heavy stuff, but there arent any significant situations where i shot someone.......... probably only cause i dont have a gun...

i think that music does affect you mentally especially if u listen to one song with the same message over and over agian some of it rubs off

music has the a powerful effect on the emotions of ppl

I agree with you guys. But I want to go back to the original question, but with the influence of listening to Pink Floyd. I found "Us And Them" on Napsterlinks. I think this song has a great emotional impact, especially on me, when I listen to this song. You can find out by clicking on the link above, and entering your email address to hear the full length song. Let me know what you guys think.
