how much does conventional word usage anchor perception?

i used to believe in an idea called the sapir-whorf hypothesis, which said that your society's language acts like a filter over your perception, and that it determines what you can perceive. This strong position has been proven false, but people still believe that there should be a weaker version of the same idea, which says that having certain words and phrases fresh in your mind, due to your culture, definitely makes it a lot easier to perceive things the conventional way, rather than another way.

What is your opinion on how this works, and do you think it would be desirable to stigmatize the common action of people punishing others for using unconventional speech/words/phrases? I believe that for everyone to be more free to perceive what they want (which is the most important freedom, in my opinion), then people should be allowed to freely experiment with their word choices without fear.
