How long would it take them to finish the job?

Amal says that she can finish a job in ½ of a day working by herself. Her son Sharif can finish the same job in ¼ of the day working alone.. How long will it take them to finish the job working together?
If Amal can finish a job in x hours and Sharif in y hours how long will it take them to finish the job if they do it together?
