How has the current trend toward ethnicity related names affected mainstream culture?

How was were names 20 years ago and how are names now? Do we pick a name for our children because of our culture? Do we name name our children so they can be different? ex: Ashley, Mary, Tom compared to Te'ana, Shanika, and Special.
