Since I own an XS I agree in part. In any control mode you can access the advance menus. There you will find one labeled flash control. Follow the instructions.
Also, this is up to you of course, you may find the single focus point usable. When I first got my camera I was shooting a large event using all 7 points. I found that many of my subjects ended up out of focus because another object or person was closer and that's where the camera grabbed focus.
With single point (I use "P" or program mode all the time rather than auto) you aim at a target and that's your focal point. On full auto you'll always get 7 points, in program mode everything is normal accept two functions, that I've found so far. You can control your flash and your focus points.
