How do you know whether your subs are broken? ?

Alright. I got like a 10 inch Sony Xplod Sub and I was playing Whatever You Like from my iPod. I was ready for some booming bass, but it sounded horrible! They were like moaning and the bass was so inconsistent (there was tons of bass one second, but next to none, the other). It sounded like a record when you speed it up, then slow it down again.

If I play a song with some higher frequencies, they seem to be better, but the bass on that song must have only been like 75 Hhz.

I don't know. How can I test whether or not they are broken? Do you guys think they are broken?
