How do you deal with a culture shock?

I'm afraid that I may have to move out the east coast because of my parents being unemployed so long. Their employment is going run out and we won't be able to support ourselves anymore if this all continues. All my life, I have lived in New Mexico for 10 years and Colorado for 7 years. These 2 states I have lived in all my life are different than out there such as how we do things in our lives and in both of these places, I have been raised under strong hispanic influence. That doesn't mean that I'm some racist person, and it doesn't really have anything to do with ethnicity. This cultural change just seems scary to me.

If I did end up moving out there, I see myself having a culture shock. How do I deal with a culture shock?

Thank you in advance!!
I'm moving to Washington D.C to live with an aunt of mine whose well to do who wants to take us under her wing.

You don't say where in the East.

My best advice is to find and attach yourself to the familiar as best as possible in your new area. Seek out the hispanics there and join their church and other activities.

I live in Los Angeles. I grew up at the beach. So, when I moved to Virginia Beach, VA, I held onto the beach as a familiar thing. It helped a LOT.

But there is not a big hispanic community in VA. Tortillas were only the small ones and VERY EXPENSIVE!!! LOL Like it was some delicacy.

I came back to L.A. where I can get a dos manos burrito any time I want one!

Also, look for the chain stores where you shop in NM. See if there are those shops in your new state.

In VA, my grocery store chain had a different name than it does in the West. The clerks all got a kick out of my "Ralph's" reward card actually working in their "Kroeger" computers. And once I found the Target and WalMart, I was all set.

Take care. I hope this helped!
