How do know if you have a good martial arts master?

I just started to look for a dojo and in making the choice I wanted to know how to tell which 1 is better? Everyone has placks on the wall (etc)... Yea Yea Yea he is better than me but I don't want to waste my time training under someone I am going to leave so I can learn from someone else....Thx for the help
