How close do people have to be-relationship wise-to call one another by

at the least Friends, it's all about respect. Some people are so friendly that they don't mind being called by their first name by anyone.

Also remember that even classmates that spend several years together still use last names with the proper honorifics.

their first names in Japanese culture? I know the difference appropriate use of the japanese honorifics -san, -chan, -sama, -sensai, and -kun, and I know that their use depends on the gender and the type and/or depth of relationship the people have with each other. Does this also apply to first names? If it does, then what relationship do people have to have for it to be considered appropriate to use their first names? (i.e., family, acquaintance, close friend, ect.) Thanks!
 
At work, school, any place that is "professional" you would call each other by surnames. My friends when they went to Saturday Japanese school called each other by last names, Fujii, Narakki, Kawasumi... but when they visited each other in the home, it was Kazuma, Chie, Ichie instead.

You can refer to a friend/spouse/relative by their first name when in conversation. I wouldn't talk to my husband's coworker and call him "Tanaka" I would call him Akiyuki. And he would call me Boli, not Tanaka either.
 
Normally surnames are used even between good friends. The main exceptions are within a family, people who knew eachother from young childhood, and to distinguish among people with the same surname in a group.
 
In japanese school it is rare that students call each other by their first names.The most decent way you can employ to call your friends in the class room is to call them by one's surname plus kun.Other than that students call each other only by surnames or nicknames.I think even close friends do not use their first names.Rather, they use nicknames.

Parents call their children by first name, obviously.But again,some parents use nicknames.
