How can anyone believe we can gix this economy without a tax hike ?

A few years ago my country had its own financial crises. We were in debt and foreign investors were pulling out. For five years we have a stabilization levy. Everyone in the public service lost 10 % of pay, and private businesses. 5%.
At first the opposition complained , but eventually after 7 years (i.e. longer than anticipated), we got back on top our debt. Now everyone else in the world is paying for this new economic crisis.
When people say " Universal Health Care is not free, its taxed" I am stupified. Really ? well how else do you expect it to be paid ! ? Grants from China ?? or More inport tax on us third world countries ?

If we in a Caribbean island can take a 10% salary cut for 7 years and survive ... you in the USA can survive whatever tax increase is necessary to get your country's debt down.

Its called sacrifice people !
Well, I hate to give personal information and stuff on the internet. Let's just say I live on one of the Windward Islands.

Raising taxes actually makes less revenue for the gov than lowering them. The highest years of revenue per capita for this country were under Reagan and W with lower tax rates. People are more willing to give when they are doing well.

By lowering corporate taxes to draw more companies to America and keeping taxes low while cutting gov spending we can fix this problem. But this was all said during the campain and no one listened and still voted in a canidate that would do none of this.

A tax as you describe CAN pay off a country's debt, but ONLY IF THE COUNTRY DOESN'T GO FURTHER INTO DEBT DURING THAT TIME.

US politicians can't seem to grasp that concept, and they certainly haven't shown any signs of being able to live within their means. And that goes for all parties, not any one in particular.

You don't tell us what country / island you're a citizen of, so I can't say whether it's worked well for you, or if you had deep debt, or if you made all the story up. If it's all true, I applaud you, your fellow countrymen, and your government and leaders. I hope you can pass on the example to the rest of us.

The concept that you can tax your way to prosperity is insane. It doesn't work.

Dealing with national debt is critical, I can agree with you there. But tax increases shouldn't be the first option there. First, you cut spending. Then you cut more spending. After that you cut more spending. Only after that should you start looking at tax hikes.

And the comments on universal health care not being free are being made because there's a huge part of America who are under the impression that it would be free. If you want to be stupified, you're aiming it at the wrong group of people.

Hiking taxes takes money out of the economy. It gives people less to spend and invest. It gets sucked into the bottomless pit of fiscal irresponsiblity that our govt operates out of. I expect the govt not to pay for health care. I expect a smaller govt and let free enterprise do the job.
