Hot rumor: The Nokia N8 with Symbian^3

I don't think that at all ??? Let me put it this way. Does anyone care about WM6.5.3.1, WM6.6.1.2, or prefer WM7? Why spend that extra time releasing/compiling that firmware as an update when they could spend their time releasing and polishing S^4?
Remember, that whatever they want to release they have to give it a firmware number (ie S60 5th ed v1.2.3 or what not). You're saying (don't know) that you would prefer to have/see every little update on your phone instead of a massive one?
If SF wanted, as soon as they did something to an icon (change color, size, etc...) they could release a firmware update, do you want that?
or would you prefer to get the update that had all of the icons changed?
SF "We changed the look of the clock icon, and we decided to give it a major firmware update, going from S^1 to S^1.0.1..." Is that what you want? That's what I'm getting at.
Yes everything that they do is put together on their Symbian roadmap of features.
Notice I said Symbian, and not S^1 or S^2. Work on what the Symbian OS will have, but don't waste time releasing an update that isn't even worth it. Yes, we know you made it open source, but that doesn't mean that you should be releasing a version when ever you finish one feature out of the hundred. You also have to think if the GUI/UX/UI that S^3 will have will be ported over to S^4, if not, then whatever time spend on the release of S^3 was wasted. I don't mean wasted time working on the Symbian OS, but the release version of it.
Also, if S^3 won't be able to upgrade to S^4, then that is once again time wasted on S^3.
See where I'm getting at? Work on Symbian, not S^3. Don't know if you understand me lol.

That's what I've always thought. Why waste time with yet another placeholder OS, when they can just concentrate on Symbian 4? I guess it's just the crazy decision making inside giant bureaucratic companies like Nokia.

Nope, I could really care less about the software. As it is right now there is no single company (OS wise) that knows how to optimize it to work well with the hardware. That one company is Apple. Nokia isn't even in the equation as Samsung slumped them down with their i8910, and also the SE Satio with their UI and 12MP camera, as to which Nokia hasn't even made a close smartphone to them. Of course you could say the N900, but did Nokia really make an attempt to sell it? They rather chose to make an event for a cheap device than the N900. But anyways, that's old news, on to the new.

The keyword is COULD. I see companies as the president, always promising, but nothing comes out :hehehe: . Hardware is mostly everything, but not to Apple. OS wise, SF is not even close. Remember, S^3 doesn't even count. Why? Because the only thing that has been done in it is make it open source, and some UI changes. The real haul is supposedly on S^4 with all the frameworks being "redone", and not just a skin like MS had done over decades.
S^1 - S^3 = open source, couple of UI changes... that's it lol
S^4 = complete break, new UI, UX, GUI?... a lot of change
Just my 2 cents btw lol

Please Please Nokia make this a logical step for the n95/n82/n79/n85/n86 crowd.... We care about form factor and we care about the camera and most importantly just make it powerful yet easy to use. I want a new touch style phone but it needs to be slick compact and functional.

As for the camera I really hope it is not 12 MP. Nokia jumped ahead leaps and bounds with the N86 camera, I hope they dont give that up for marketing. I would prefer a more sensitive 8 MP sensor, I would love 720P filming and I would love an HDMI out. Please Nokia do it right.

The other thing I find interesting from the pictures and the press release is the TV icon in the menu...whether that will be more than a glorified version of the video center from s60v3 remains to be seen.

Man, if this phone has a badass processor and graphics co processor with free working voice TTS nav, I'm all over it!
PS: It must have ATT 3G. If it doesn't well I'm gone from Nokia until they start to use ATT 3G again. Can't say as I blame them because anybody knows that the target market for that price phone at ATT is the iPhone crowd. Once they go iPhone, they never go back....

HELLO NURSE

I don't think they're "copying Apple". They've recognized a demand that they make their devices slimmer (which I don't think anyone here would mind) and less moving parts = slimmer device. And besides, if they wanted to copy Apple, it would have a 5MP camera with no flash and the menu button would be centered :P

If Nokia wanted to create some great good will from their customers, they'd offer N97/97 Mini owners a firmware update with Symbian 3.

It'd be sort of a "Thanks for buying our premium so-called flagship device that didn't work as promised. Here's a user interface improvement for you guys..."

Yup! Looks promising.

Obviously a prototype so will reserve final judgement on design until the production models are out. However the aluminium body looks great and so should not be too heavy.

Looks like the battery is behind screws, but how many people actually swap batteries? Not many. So if its behind screws most people could not care. If its behind screws even those who do want to swap it could not complain a la iPhone. :D However, I would not be surprised if they are not there in the final model though. EDIT: another pic on Infomobile seems to confirm the screws are not there for the battery!

The camera module seems relatively thick which is - picture quality wise - promising! And oh yeah: Xenon (unless I am mistaken)! :)

Hardware button placement - might be a prototype thing, but I guess for right handed people that placement would be better than in the middle?

You need space for the moving parts. Nokia tried just putting a sliding cover over a lens unit on the N97, which is the simplest way to do it, and it wasn't the best of ideas-it scratches the glass on the N97,N86, and N900 and their only solution was to cut a hole in the plastic where it would slide in front of the camera. This is different from the N82 which has a switch and space between the lens and the cover.

Now with that phone, it was bulky from the start so I'm sure they were able to use that to not make the camera unit stick out, but seeing as this is pretty slim by nokia standards, look how much that camera unit already sticks out. It'd add even more millimeters on the camera unit if they wanted to add an N82 style cover and I sure as hell don't want an N97 styled one.

Yeah I know, Verizon messes less/little with their phones. I just wonder if they were in as powerful a position as AT&T, would they continue to be so gracious? :)
