Horror Talk Thread

"Last House On The Left" and "I Spit On Your Grave" were both banned due to Mary Whitehouse (and her cronies) and the moral-panic surrounding 'Video Nasties' in the early eighties. They were probably two of the better flicks slapped with the VN tag - believe me! Both UK releases are cut, by the way.

If you two are after something really controversial, try and check out "Nekromantik", "Nekromantik 2" and "Irreversible". The latter being much more than your archetypal 'dubious content' flick. It's superb. It's also takes some endurance to make it past 10 mins! [not just because of the violence, but confusion and erratic camera-movements add to this..]

Again, not horror, but seeing as it's been discussed in this thread already...I watched Requiem For A Dream for the first time last week, and whilst I didn't find it to be as shocking as I'd imagined, I still found it a very absorbing and emotional affair. I cried at the end. Great film. I need to watch it again soon.

I watched the uncut version of Cannibal Ferox the other day. Sort of 'meh', I guess. I didn't like the bits with the animals.

I already own the anime version of Ichi The Killer, but I finally watched the film version last night. I thought it was pretty good. The gore was well cool! :D

I suppose different things scare different people. As I've mentioned, I'm still terrified of the reverend in Poltergeist 2, which never scared my sister at all. I can't believe that I'm still such a wimp over this film at age 30!!!
 
I have Irreversible on order, never heard of the other two though, may do some searching - thanks.

I know both Last House and I Spit on your Grave are cut, but even uncut I don't think they deserve the huge cult status they got. Mary Whitehouse and the like didn't do themselves any favours, if they'd ignored it it would have disappeared, instead they banned it and made it famous (Frankie goes to Hollwood & Relax type of scenario).

aliens- the best movie i have ever seen.
star wars- just darth vader
gremlins- there scary and funny
the ring- ive only watched the beggining and i was scared.
 
I watched Requiem For A Dream after seeing it pop up time and time again. Yea it was'nt to bad. Drugs, Prostitution, Hitmen all very understandable but the mother (What The....).

Cannibal Ferrox? I thought Cannibal Holocaust was the one with the animals. Ferrox is the one where the bloke loses his manhood. I myself prefer Cannibal Ferrox.

I have never seen Itchi. Is it worth seeing? Please tell me a bit about it?
 
Er.... the grudge your number 1? omg :eek: . Anyway, i like the exorcist3 because i thought it was creepy, and in some way i thought it was kinda real.

I agree with scream and the shining, but what lies beneath number 2?. I enjoyed what lies beneath but no way i would put it in my chart, why do you like what lies beneath?.

Alien is ok but i like the sequel Aliens, good film.

Like you say, the cult-status on the majority of these films are because of the controversy/banning. David Hess in "Last House On The Left" delivered a performance of true greatness... and he also wrote (and sang) the music too -which was another highlight. When push comes to shove Last House' is only a remake of "The Virgin Spring" anyway.

Another couple of flicks are the Region 1 versions of "Scrapbook" and Lucio Fulci's "New York Ripper". NYR is the ultimate sleaze-fest, with some really questionable misogynistic violence. I preferred Fulci's zombie flicks myself. "Scrapbook"... hmmm. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone - I just couldn't find any redeeming factors whatsoever. It's extreme and certainly controversial though. The UK version is cut by 15 mins!

I'm seriously considering investing in a R1 player, there seem to be many films that are bedly cut or unavailable in the UK.

Many of these types of film I just want to see in order to know what all the fuss is about, and occassionaly you get a film that really affects you and deserves it's status. Requiem for a Dream is a great example, I think I just sat there for about half an hour after the credits thinking 'whoa', I couldn't even begin to describe the utter feeling of emptiness that it left me with.

Blair Witch was like that in a way, after it finished it just left me stunned. There was no resolution, no happy ending, just shock (helped because I watched it in the cinema I think).

Films like this leave with more than just the imprint of fake blood on your mind.
 
Im sure they must of exagerated it a bit. Especially when the bloke is raped by the Demon!! :eek:

This film reminRAB me of "The Entity". Thats a creepy film also. Speaking of which I must get.

Sci Fi channel. I never think of looking whats on it :( I could of recorded it myself staright onto DVD :mad:
Never mind and yep the copy I got was of some American channel.
 
Requiem' left me the exact same way. I sat shell-shocked for a few minutes - a bit like a rabbit caught in headlights. Then most unrelenting 20 mins in cinema - easily.

You'll probably struggle to get "Scrapbook". PM me and I'll bung you it in the post. Like I said though... I'm sure as hell not recommending it!

I love most of the films mentioned on here that were made before the 90s, but the 3 that scare me the most are:

The bit with the sister in Pet Semetary still scares me so much that I can't watch it!!!

The Reverend in Poltergeist 2 also still scares me and I can't watch it at night!

There's a film made in the 80s called Witchboard that's now out on DVD and is fairly scary!

Oops - forgot to mention The Haunting: a true story which has been mentioned by someone else. If this is the one I think it is, it's very creepy! Does anyone know if it's out on DVD???
 
Has anyone seen Ginger Snaps: The Beginning? it looks good, i rented it out once and couldnt finish watching it :cry: i might rent it out again soon, its meant to be really good.
