Hooking up an I Pod or MP3 player directly to a car amplifier?

I have a rhino (4x4 golf cart) and I would like to install only an amplifier,two speakers, volume control and only use an I pod or MP3 player for the music source ( I do not want to install a stereo). Is this possible and if so what kind of amp 2ch or 4ch and how do you wire it? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
