I would both see if you can work some more daytime hours and pick up a little extra pay, then save that extra pay in a savings account until you get $1,000 saved up. Then try to find an ugly, but safe, used car that you can buy for less than $2,500, and take out a loan for the remaining $1,500. If you borrow $1,500 and pay it back over a year, you will only have a payment of about $30 - $35 a week. Maybe a friend or family member could lend you that amount.
