HELP WITH FINANCIAL ISSUES! Need a Car!?

I would both see if you can work some more daytime hours and pick up a little extra pay, then save that extra pay in a savings account until you get $1,000 saved up. Then try to find an ugly, but safe, used car that you can buy for less than $2,500, and take out a loan for the remaining $1,500. If you borrow $1,500 and pay it back over a year, you will only have a payment of about $30 - $35 a week. Maybe a friend or family member could lend you that amount.

Where to look - start by putting out the word among friends, family, church to see if anyone is selling an older used car. Look in the classified ads in your local paper. Look on craigslist. Ask a local mechanic where he would go if he wanted to buy a used car.

If you save $1,000 - $1,500 you should be able to find a used vehicle that runs. If you want a nicer used car, save around $4,000 or more. Make sure that you cut out all unnecessary expenses: eating out, cable, internet, shopping, etc to save the money. Look for a second job or side jobs (lawn care, babysitting, tutoring, etc.) in order to save more money as well. If you choose to have a car payment (or if your girlfriend chooses to), look for an inexpensive vehicle $7,000-$9,000 and provide a down payment of at least $1,000 to $1,500. The payments will be monthly spread over 5 years and yes, it will cost more than the original price because of the interest. Look on Craigs List or shop around for used cars to see what you can afford. Always have a vehicle inspected by your own mechanic prior to purchasing... it'll save you a lot of trouble down the road.
