My dog is a rescue so i dont know his age but we guess about a year old. When I first brought him home he was thin, dirty, and had a nasty scar on his back. He submissively urinated a couple times when we first brought him home and when we took him to the vet but he got over that and warmed up to people very quickly. Now he CRAVES attention and only response to me, no one else in the family. While im not around he runs through the house, jumps on furniture, barks when he's put outside, tears things up in my room, jumps on guest and ran away a couple times while i was at school. There was even one time that i went out of my backyard without him and supposedly he went nuts and managed to OPEN the back gate to get out.
When I tell him "no" he acts extremely frightened, sad and sometimes runs from me. He's very well behaved (walks behind me when i tell him too, comes when called, goes to his bed when i tell him to go lay down) when theres no distractions. But when I take him on walks he goes nuts when he sees another dog or person and completely ignores me. His lunging and barking at other dogs has gotten worse the more I show dominance over him. (by showing dominance I mean making him get off furniture, making him walk behind me, not letting him win staring contest, feeding him after I eat ecs..) But like I said he acts terrified when i scold him so i dont know if he's trying to be dominate or not.
So i guess my questions are: why does he only listen to me and how do i get him to listen to the rest of the family? why does he act so terrified when I scold him? i dont beat him. whats the best approach to train him?
Some other things: I take him on long walks and to the park 3-5 times a week in attempt to get his energy out but it doesnt seem to work. Im not sure but breed he is but he looks like a mix between a dingo and a lab
He also has a huge backyard to play in all day and i play with him DAILY.
Ok i guess i should of mentioned how much attention and love i give this dog. I play with him EVERY DAY he gets exercise EVERY DAY. I use A LOT of positive reinforcement and praise. He's not completely out of control. He's outside in the day when no ones home to keep him from chewing things up. he ran away just twice through a hole in the fence when we first got him. (and that one time he opened the gate) but i was just bringing that up to show how he has separation anxiety. We cant afford a professional trainer right now since we just took a 60% pay cut. I love my dog to death and hes been my best friend as im going through a lot of personal struggles. I refuse to just give up. So please I dont want criticism, just some answers to my questions
I never yell at or hit my dog either. We also have other dogs that he chases around the yard.
