...a REALLY REALLY good price.? hello! i was going to buy a used Orion SkyQuest XT12 Computerized IntelliScope for a really good price of about 500. The only thing is that there are dents on the outer shell but the seller says that it does not affect the performance of the tube. I was wondering what kind of dents would have to be done in order to cause any damage to the performance? big ones? small minor ones?
what is a hall effect senor and how do i make sure its fine and working?

The thin metal tubes of these telescopes are very easily dented. Usually these don't affect performance, but they may indicate that the telescope has been treated roughly, and may have suffered some less obvious damage. I'd be particularly concerned about the Hall effect sensors which supply positional information to the IntelliScope computer. Make sure that these are working properly.

As long as the dents don't block any of the light reaching the primary mirror, they shouldn't affect performance. Hall effect sensors track the movements of the telescope and tell the computer where it's pointed, and the easiest way to test them is to set the scope up according to the instructions, then see if the computer locates objects correctly.
