having problems with my 89 kawasaki sx?

Im not quite sure whats wrong, this setup is a little different than my 550's. I have a 89 kawasaki sx 650, when i hit the start button the starter motor turns but it doesnt grab the flywheel, when i open the plug on the front of the flywheel case, a bunch of really funny smelling smoke comes out, what could this be?
