My first career was in a culture where scarce resources were stretched to breaking point, from Day 1 we all "osmotically" developed the attitude of continuous flexibility, "job first, me second", and how to target, share and optimise scarce resources - manpower, time, equipment, know-how, commitment, patience and energy.
For a while now I've been working in a luxurious City starched-white-collar workplace where manpower, time, money, and equipment sprang up at the snap of a be-jewelled finger. But the recession and redundancies have finally hit and management is having major problems getting their message across that we all have to work "flexibly" - the "scarce resource" pattern where you can't just switch off your brain and go on auto but have to be constantly engaged, constantly focussed, constantly making judgement calls and decisions "what's the best way to get this done now?" - and the answer today isn't the same as the answer tomorrow -
The people are revolting (!) - "I'm confused!", "That's not my job!"
Have you ever turned around your workplace culture? Or been in a turnaround?
