Have I Got News For You - Series 40 - Thursdays 9pm BBC1

I think you misread me. I was posting in response to someone who was objecting to BC appearing as in the posters opinion he was not sufficiently well known to merit the appearance - hence my reference to GR as someone who was globally known and made a complete ass of himself on an episode it was painful to watch. Mentioning GR as being globally known does not preclude me from also believing that BC is famous. Which I do. And very good he was too:)

I'd never heard of Benedict Cumberbatch or seen any of his work, but he was a funny, reasonably sharp, competent presenter, so not a bad choice as it turned out.

Victoria Coren is very pretty, but has what I can only describe as a snide look which I find disconcerting. She didn't seem to put any effort into the show, but someone did say earlier that a lot of her contribution was cut.

I think HIGNFY is a bit safe these days. Jon RicharRABon's rant apart, it was all fairly tame.

But he's been in several successful dramas, not just Holmes, and he's a film and stage actor of some repute. Lots of actors have presented the show. It's hardly luck that he was good at delivering the lines - it's what he does for a living! And he's got plenty of experience doing comedy too. Seriously, what's the deal? And why do you assume he's less recognisable that Gordon Ramsey? Not everyone watches food programmes. And Cumberbatch has been on the front of the Radio Times, which should make him pretty recognisable.

Because that's not in the same league as Alexander Armstrong, a comedian who does a sketch show?

Or Damien Lewis, an actor largely unknown to the masses in the UK?

Or Carol Vorderman?

Or Liza Tarbuck?

Or any number of interchangable stand up comedians?

Where exactly is the bar set for HIGNFY material?

I think Frank always does a good job - he's fairly quick witted and can usually get a laugh.

Reginald D. Hunter is always good value.

I found it quite bizarre that halfway through the episode, JSP started talking in quite a hushed tone though ..

They dig up all sorts of people to present this show.

I've not watched the Sherlock series either, yet I knew who he was, mainly due to the BBC advertising the show so frequently. I think you'll find that not knowing something is ignorance. You are just getting hung up on the pejorative implication of that word.

Ignorance is a state of being uninformed (lack of knowledge).

The word "ignorant" is an adjective describing a person in the state of being unaware.

So yes it is quite literally ignorance, just as I am ignorant of the identity of Bolivia's Minister of Schools (or even if a post even exists) or how to build an internal combustion engine from scratch. :D

Tonight would have been better if the early part of it wasn't so dominated by Janet Street Porter. I'm hoping that the "a bit more" version of this is better.

Was Ramsay famous worldwide when he appeared on HIGNFY several years ago? Cumb might not have done the show if not for Holmes, but also probably not if he didn't also have years of appearances in movies, plays, and other high-profile TV shows. Fact.

Lovely to hear the contempt you have for ordinary hard-working people - 9 to 5 wage slaves indeed! A pity you're sick of our whinging; personally I'm sick of your posts on here, but there you go, you still make them!

No-one was criticising Green for being successful; he was being criticised because, being successful, he has avoided paying his fair share of the country's running costs, leaving people poorer than himself to pick up his share of the burden. That is indeed, as you say, the way the world works, and that's why the world is crap. Bear in mind that if we all did as Green does we'd inhabit a world of roaRAB crumbling into disrepair, little or no benefits to help out those who lose their jobs, rampant crime and disorder. Let's see how successful Green could be in a world like that!

you just knew after 5 minutes in, Janet Street Porter was not going to shut up about herself, and well you were right, god it was awful, dont know how Ian & Paul put up with it.
