Have I Got News For You - Series 40 - Thursdays 9pm BBC1

63 articles on it in The Guardian online, I also read the Guardian and remember a lot being made of the new Sherlock in their paper.

Because it's a prime show in a good spot on BBC One? You might expect them to get peopel on who are instaltly recognisable?

Ignorant is generally used as an insult.

Just caught up with tonight's show... am now thinking this was the worst HIGNFY ever, and I've seen every single one ever made. Abysmal show & host, and even Paul isn't exhibiting any of his usual brilliance.

The bit that made me uncomfortable was when the so-called comedian insulted the businessman Phillip Green and called him a "sh*t"

Apart from being in poor taste perhaps the same comedian would let us know his personal contribution to the UK economy...

Well, they could have just paid attention to the show, which not only explained who everyone was, but made jokes about it. What did you think "Round of the Baskervilles" was about?

The main requirement is the ability to read an autocue. Which some of them fail. I thought he did well at that, and had the necessary aplomb. He wasn't especially witty but he did enough of his own off-the-cuff ripostes to suggest he could be good if given more time to relax into it.

As you implied early, he is a BBC rising star. Sherlock was very successful.

I was thrilled to see Cumberbatch hosting the show. Finally someone to swoon over chairing the show. Lots of women on twitter felt the same way.:D

There's a big difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion.
After reading Sir Philip's findings about the scandalous amount of waste in governmental departments, I don't blame him for trying to pay as little tax as possible.
As a former BBC freelancer, and now as someone who runs his own business, I can confirm there is no shortage of waste and overstaffing at the BBC either. Their business practises wouldn't last five minutes in the commercial sector.
As for tonight's host, I've never heard of him. Victoria Coren is welcome in my flat anytime she likes though!"

No, as a comedy/satire show I'd expect them to get people on who would be appropriate for the show. Some of the most embarrassing appearances have been from the 'instantly recognisable' eg Charlotte Church,Gordon Ramsey. In fact I would say that BC falls into this 'stunt casting' category due to his appearance in the breakout tv hit of the summer, and it was just chance that he was able to cope better than some.

Whilst HIGNFY has probably had its heyday I still find it enjoyable.

I thought Benedict Cumberbatch did a good job though as a huge Sherlock fan I am biased.

The cringey bit was when Paul Merton started doing the Benny Hill theme tune over the Kim Jong-un footage. I think he expected the audience to join in but it just fell flat.

Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor who (a) played the part of the young Stephen Hawking in a biographical drama a few years ago, (b) narrated the script written by Hawking in the recent series about the History of the Universe.

Just watched the extended version, poor stuff. That John whatisface annoys, Vikki Corren neeRAB a script (History of Corners was excellent), the other two are bored.
