Have I Got News For You - Series 40 - Thursdays 9pm BBC1

I liked Charlotte Church! She did very well considering her extreme youth at the time and would probably be even better now.

This week's show was OK, I thought. I've seen better episodes and worse ones. Bendict Cumberbatch did OK as host, but doesn't compare with the likes of Alexander Armstrong; on the other hand he was no Gordon Ramsey either. Victoria Coren is always great to see (I liked the little "jumper on or off" discussion at the start! :D )

Who are you, Green's PA?

Tax avoidance may be perfectly legal, but it's in even poorer taste when the people who practice it have the cheek to lecture the rest of us in how the country should be run.

I thought last night's show was a good start to the new series overall. Quite liked Cumberbatch in the chair but not that impressed with the two guests

I remember the comments (including mine) after the last show of the last series about how cynical Ian Hislop had become and how little Paul Merton had to say for himself. I thought last night was more like how I think the show ought to be from the "good old days"

Until he popped up in Holmes I'd only heard of him because he reportedly turned down the chance of playing the lead in Doctor Who, it seems he didn't want his face appearing on childrens lunch boxes. I also don't buy the Radio Times.

Watched the extended edition last night as i never watched the show on Thursday night.Overall i thought it was a good episode.I thought Benedict did a good job.

Indeed.

If you have vast amounts of money you can go to people who help you avoid paying tax - but you need a lot of money.

If you are poorer and evade it you are evil.

What's your point about not buying the Radio Times? Plenty of people don't read newspapers and so are unaware of lots of famous people. What does that prove?

You could take anyone, no matter how famous, and claim not to have heard of them, and not to have followed or bought any of the things that person has appeared in. It doesn't mean they're not famous, high profile or talented enough for presenting HIGNFY. There are probably plenty of people who haven't heard of many of the show's presenters. Many people probably haven't heard of the show itself!

Any idea why? I'm bored and was going to catch up on some programmes. I love HIGNFY (or did when it was funnier..) and not happy that the extended episode isn't available. They don't put The Apprentice you have been fired long version on either..

He also played Sherlock Holmes in the acclaimed recent BBC series.

Quite often people mention actors etc. who I have never heard of, but I tend to look them up on Wikipedia first to avoid making a fool of myself.

I read the Guardian, mainly. I've read a fair amount in it about Cumberbatch. He's rather a well known actor who was head-hunted for Sherlock.

Perhaps you never read Mark Lawson?
