Has the work culture in the UK gone too far? What is it like in your country?

Unless you have plans (although everything is pretty much closed) I'd consider you lucky to be sitting there surfing yahoo answers and getting paid!
I do hope you're not working tomorrow though.
It's pretty much the same in Canada too. Stores used to be closed on Christmas Eve, now everything is still open..
they're trying mighty hard to make more profit...
I think there's even a mall somewhere downtown that's open on Christmas day...
Quite sad..but what can you do when corporate wants to make more money?

I'm sitting here supervising an empty gym on Christmas Eve and thinking, why on Earth am I here today?
Do employers in this country (UK) try and squeeze the life out of us and leave very little time for leisure and relaxation?
Is it like this in other countries? I know it's a bit more chilled on the continent but what is it like in the US?

Be gratefull that you have a job !!
There are thousands in the UK who have lost their job this year and many thousands more who will lose their jobs in 2009.

Things have become very unpersonal here in the US. Companies really do not care about their people.

Whats worse than a company like this? A company that keeps telling their people that they care and provide life balance policies over and over when the truth is just the opposite or is only practiced with selective people.

Yes, most companies don't want to give you too much leisure time. You might start thinking too much and realize what a crappy job you have.

The US is 10 times worse! They seriously work all the time and hardly get any holidays.

Yeah, that's a real kick in the face. Is your boss Pakistani? Unfortunately the UK are slowly getting bombarded by them and it's a damn shame. I know of some places where the white English people have to obtain written permission to enter some stores, pubs, and whatnot. It's too bad really. Over here in Canada (particularly Windsor, Ontario) it is slowly getting to be the same way with other cultures pushing themselves in and taking over everything. Over here, if you're an immigrant, apparently you have more "rights" than a regular Canadian does. You get a free home, car, as well as a guaranteed career (not just a "job") Canadians are losing jobs and are unable to become employed yet the immigrants get whatever they ask for as well as getting away with downgrading and insulting the Canadians. Sad stuff.

I used to work on an assembly line and company policy allowed me to complete my assembly work in 52 seconds but my boss rode me until I was doing my assembly job in 17 seconds. I did this for 11 hours day. My boss got a big bonus for beating his production numbers. I didn't get anything extra.

I live in the UK, but i think USA has it much harder.
My husbands aunty lives in the USA and only gets 2wks paid holiday a year!
