I am going in for a tonsillectomy on 12/8/08 and I am scarred to death of the anesthesia more then the pain I will have afterward. I am going to be 35 on the 4th and 4 days later I will be having the first surgery of my life. I have all these crazy thoughts going through my head about what bad things could happen to me including not waking up again! Am I worrying for nothing or do I have valid reason to? I am afraid of things like waking up as a vegetable. I have put this surgery off for years but my sleep apenea has gotten worse and I have already had a heart disease scare so I finally made the decision to go and do it and I just can't wait till it is over and I am waking up from it. I am praying everything will go perfect as it can. Everybody keeps saying I am going to be in a lot of pain, I tell them I just want to be alive to feel that pain. They say be careful what you wish for....lol
Please help me get through this. I feel like oh it is far off I have time but then time is flying but then again I just want it to rush here and just be over!

Hi Eeyore1973,

dont be worried about anaesthetic. I understand your concern. I was the same way. BTW. I had my surgery on Nov 2, 2008. That was last Sunday.
And here I am at home typing this to you. So there goes to show I am no vegetable and I did wake up. You will too.

I had my tonsillectomy procedure. ALL went well. I am on day 5 so I am just resting alot alot. You will need to relax and rest afterthe surgey.

Dont be worried because the doctors are trained for this.

You will be asleep in like 10 seconds after they give you the anaesthetic. Even quicker than that. ALl I remember was the doctor asking me what I would normally do on a Sunday. I then said I would normally be watching TV and cooking dinner and then it was lights out. SNOOZE LAND> SLEEP. I then woke in recovery 1 hour later and asked them immediately if they found anything in my tonsils to which they responded NO!!. They must have thought that I was hallucinating about stuff in my tonsils. :D :D LOL. But I wasnt. I really wanted to know if they found stuff in them like tonsil stones. I was very conscious. I could tell you how many people were in the room.etc.

Then I was wheeled to the ward. THEn i went home the next day.

Dont be worried about the operation. JUstrelax. Now My only wish is that I had relaxed befored the surgery and not got all worked up.

Take care. Hope this helps you. RELAX. STOP READING NEGATIVE POSTS> they dONT HELP>

Take care,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thank you so much for your reply. I feel much better now. And your right I will stop reading the negative posts.

I am so glad you are doing so well after your tonsillectomy. It is so nice to hear a good outcome for a change. I know I am going to just have to learn how to relax and everything will be fine. Everyone keeps telling me that so I am going to just start believing it. Thank you again. And I wish you well.

My only bad side effect that I suffered from was nausea and vomiting. That was bad enough. I too was afraid to be put completely under. It's one of those things where you just have to have faith that the anesthesiologist knows what he/she is doing! That's a lot of trust put into ones hands!

Hi Mom22greatkids,

Thank you so much for the well wishes. I am so happy everything went fine for you.
It helps to hear that there are others out there, who were where I am now, and did great. Thank you for easing my fears.

Hi Kelly,

Wow! you just had a tonsillectomy yesterday and your already typing away on here. That's awesome. Did they give you anything to calm you down before giving you anesthesia? Was the anesthesia through IV or Inhallation? Sorry for all the questions. I am just trying to prepare the best I can. I hope you have a speedy recovery. If you can please keep me posted on your day to day. The time till my surgery seems like it is just flying and will be here tomorrow. I feel like I just scheduled it yesterday and it was 2 weeks ago already that I did. Time is flying!!! Take care.

I felt the same way when I went in for my tonsillectomy. It was my first surgery at age 36. I was so afraid of being put to sleep. But everything went fine! I had a great recovery and by day 5 I was feeling really well. The first day was rough because the pain killer made me sick. After two days I switched to liquid tylenol and did so much better. One suggestion...keep yourself as hydrated as possible. Drink lots of water. Make yourself swallow it . The more you drink the better you will feel. I got my water as icy as possible so it would numb my throat. You will do fine.. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Your right that is A LOT of trust to put in ones hands. Sorry you had to deal with the nausea and vomiting. I hate that feeling but I would rather be feeling all of that and the pain just as long as I am awake after surgery.

Well, today is Sunday - two days post op. Woke up feeling worse in regard to swallowing because my throat was dry, but after I let some ice chips melt in my mouth I felt alot better. I've been constantly using ice chips and have gone through about 4 of my 5 lb bag of ice. Though the ice helps, swallowing is more difficult than the past day or so. I'm also keeping up with my medications. Overall, I still feel better than I thought I would post op, but I've been reading and have heard from my doctor that the worst is still yet to come when the scabs start coming off.

Eeyore, yes, they said they gave me something to calm me before going under, but I don't remember feeling much of a difference (I've had 2 surgeries before this and I felt a difference in regard to them giving me something via IV to calm me down during those). The anesthesia was given through IV in all of my surgeries including this one. Of the three surgeries I've had, I was most nervous for this one, but not really sure why. The other two were for female issues.

Anyway, I'll keep you updated!

Hello! I just had my tonsillectomy yesterday. I too was extremely nervous about the anesthesia - more so than the pain felt afterwards. My surgery went very well with no complications and I left the hospital the same day. Because I get heartburn once in awhile, my anestheologist told me to take 150mg Zantac the night before and the morning of the surgery. I also asked them to give me a patch for nausea due to the anesthesia - that helped alot. Today the pain is worse than yesterday, and I expect the pain is expected to increase in a few days. I'm on a liquid amoxocillin, a liquid hydrocodone-Apap solution and lidocaine to numb my throat. It is extremely difficult to swallow because of the swelling and pain, but I'm just glad that I woke up from the surgery because as I previously mentioned I was very nervous for the anesthesia.

didn't really know the basis for your question. Your surgery was for tonsils? okay the nausea is from all the saliva, etc. that you are swallowing. it is making you ill because you have nothing in your stomach. Better to drink flavored water with vitamins, etc. for a little while at least.

I had one side affect from two surgeries within 2 days for gall bladder removal in 1985 that went from bad to worse. It was depression. I came home and all I did for an entire week was cry and look at the nasty scar. This was before the less-intrusive version most people get now.

That was my side-affect.
