Harshest Movie Ending

Arlington Road (1999)

No matter how many times I watch it - I kind of always want Jeff Bridges' character to survive!

i can recall a harrowing vietnam film casualties of war
which starred michael j fox and sean penn. but it was a
vietnamese/american actress thuy thu le, i think it was her
only film, who made brian de palma's film memorable

2nd Wicker Man; grim and sinister little movie; and you do not really expect it to end as it does; well I thought it would cop out with neat ending but it does not.

indeed - its the oft cited continuity WTF?

but surely
gravity is the answer. its stuck at the top but not the bottom, and just lifted to get in the hole

Titanic!! who would have guessed that ending LOL ok im kidding :p

I too like Harsh endings like the ending in SAW!
I would at times root for the bad guy in some movies and would like to see the bad guy live in the end, buts thats just me

Not at all.

Andy was the warden's pet prisoner, which is why his cell was not checked or searched after he started doing tax returns etc. It was working for the warden that allowed him to pull off the escape.

It's all explained quite clearly in Stephen Kings book.

It should be pretty obviouse to anyone watching the film why his cell is left alone....which is why it is not explained directly. Andy helps fiddle the books, in return he gets protection form the Sisters, a nice library and his cell left alone
.

I was lucky enough to see Blair Witch pre-hype, without a clue of what I was in for, and was blown away by it. Seems that a lot of the initial reviewers had the same sense of shock from the film, which led to the over-hype spoiling it for everyone else.

Talking of the Evil Dead, this thread can't go without a mention of Army of Darkness.

The final scene in Donnie Darko is touchingly tragic, and another great 'harsh' ending is the end credit sequence to the Dawn of the Dead remake.

Probably my pick would be Dark Water (I prefer the original to the remake, although it was good too).

Cant believe this films not been said..

Layer Cake... i mean i was totally gobsmaked at that ending.

Shawshank Redemption... to add wern't the posters changed every so often. im sure he changed differant posters..... but my theory would of been. if he had clawed his way out of that wall. wouldnt a draft of came through at some point and blew the poster a bit?

12 Monkeys

Being a hollywood movie, you expect the virus bloke would be caught. A good movie showing that time is an endless cycle
