Harshest Movie Ending

FAIL SAFE! Yeah, that's it. Thanks! :)

Didn't know Sidney Lumet directed it. (He's a pretty good director  )
Didn't know the US air force refused to assist in making it.

Wasn't really the ending but I remember being really gutted when the bird dripped blood into the taxi drivers eye in 28 days later.
Fully agree with the Green Mile and the butterfly effect. Also Donnie Darko.

Ha ha! Someone said Easy Rider before me.

That truly was a film in which the editing was highly controversial.

Very bleak ending but a must watch... Anyone else agree?

I'm sorry but Thelma and Louise is heartwarming and as tender as you can get. I wouldn't say it was harsh.

I thought Layer Cake's was quite harsh, but very good, probably one of the best endings i've seen in a film for the last couple of years (they dont know how to end them these days!!!)

Donnie Darko's was harsh and i really didn't like it, great film tho, but i wish it didn't have to end like that...

I think he meant that the ending, although sad, had redeeming features that was a bit uplifting. Both the main characters went off together, determining their own fate. The ending in a film like Easy Rider was, by far, bleaker, disturbing and without pity.

But but...

Not a harsh ending, surely? Yes, Donnie died but in so doing saved the world and - far more importantly - Gretchen. It's the classic dying-to-save-the-one-you-love tale, really.

Ok. I don't remember the name of this film. But it was b&w and starred Henry Fonda as the President and Larry Hagman as a Russian interpreter.

US planes carrying atomic bombs (I think) have been given the wrong orders to go and bomb Moscow. Once the orders are given they go 'dark' and cannot be contacted.
There begins tense negotiations between Moscow and Washington as the world nears war, and

the US President says the Russians should shoot down the planes. Which they do. But one gets through and drops the bomb killing millions of people.
Russia is rightly angry. To make up for it. The US President drops a bomb on an American city. Also killing millions.

I never expected that ending.
