"Gurren Lagann" On Sci-Fi's Ani-Monday Block - Talkback *MAJOR SPOILERS*

I'm afraid that's not what I would consider to be groundbreaking. It was the great execution of a very old idea, but not breaking any new ground. That's the difference. In fact, there are other things Gurren Lagann did that would fit such a description more accurately than this example (perhaps its sheer scale), from my personal point of view, so it looks like this will remain a difference of opinion.

To be very frank, the idea certainly wasn't unthinkable. I don't believe only "red shirts" are meant to die or can be identified as likely to do so. Important secondary or main characters can also die, fulfilling a given role and allowing others to move forward. That's been the entire point in many past series. If you've seen Macross or Robotech, as previously mentioned, there's even an easy and old parallel.

If people were surprised, as many indeed were, that's just a matter of Gainax's skillful presentation, not a sign of true innovation.

In other worRAB...I think it was all about when that would happen rather than if. For me, that was a clear possibility...particularly since Simon was the protagonist and Kamina's last interaction with Yoko was a bit of a death flag. Followed by a wonderful execution to be sure (although it included a partial reference to another famous anime death), which enhanced the effect, but didn't make it original.

Man do I really love episode 15. It was good the first time, great the second. Not to mention the background music rocks. and the COLORS. I love all the bright colors.

The Spiral King is just all kinRAB of awesome. Villian?- yes, but badass? Even MORE so. He blows away the normal connotation of evil, because not many can live up to the hype of being the bad guy.
Lord Genome and Emperor Charles from Code geass should bond sometime. I bet they've have alot to talk about over tea.

So I feel bad for Viral.

I think the change was just temporary allowed by the infusion of spiral power given off by Lord Genome in the other dimension. He reverted when everyone woke up I think.

Wow. Episode 2 was even better than episode 1. The way Kamina got his mecha was freaking awesome. It hilarious how he names his attacks too. Blum's Leeron had me rolling on my bed. Best Blum voice ever. Simon and Yoko were great too. It looks like Sci Fi has winner here. Can't wait till next week.

Ultimate epic transformation in mech history: BEGIN!

Okay everyone, all together now in the most epic voice you've got:

"JUST WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK WE ARE?"!

It appears we are locked in one of those eye of the beholder paradoxes that can only be solved with one on one corabat with bat'leths or a Hora dance off. My bat'leth is at the shop and I only dance the Hora at Bar Mitzvahs and other Jewish celebrations. At this time there are none on my calendar.

Funny that you mention Robotech/Macorss. Before watching that series the only exposure I ever had to anime was the Battle of the Planets version of Gatchaman and Voltron. Both were tres cool, however both versions were heavily edited and from what I understand the American versions do not hold a candle to the originals.

Macross/Robotech blew my mind because it was a brilliant synergy of animation and great storytelling. One of the things that I admire about that particular anime is that it took risks. It was not just Roy Fokker's death that showed how serious the producers were but it was the fact they had the balls to kill off Ben Dixon so soon after Roy's death.

I watch more tv and films so there are very few things that surprise me since Hollywood is unable and unwilling to make the effort to try something new. Which explains why I find Gurran Lagann so groundbreaking. Something like Kamina's death, a likable main character, is something that rarely happens if ever on mainstream television. When they kill off that type of character they figure out a way to bring that character back. Even Joss Whedon did that when he sent Angel to hell in an episode of Buffy.

My theory regarding your response is that you have watched more anime than I have since you make reference to anime specific plot devices. Which is why the plot points in Gurran Lagann are somewhat predictable to you.

Despite the fact anime is more widely available than it was back in the day, I do not have the time to watch it as much as I would want which is also another explanation of why I see Gurran Lagann as ground breaking.
