Guilty Pleasures...

Well considering the music in the Godfather, not at all. I was just wandering why i've never soundtracked anything of my own with it!

I really would'nt class a lot of those as pop:

Fleetwood Mac-Began life as a blues rock band (and a fookin good one at that) before descending into aor mediocrity; however their music is still intrinsically rock, however diluted it seems.

Queen-They wrote rock songs with a pop sensibility. They mastered the art of the chrorus, but virtually all their output is rock orientated. Their aim was to appeal to as many fans as possible.

Van Halen-Commercial-yes, pop music? No. Eruption could not be classed as a pop song by any stretch of the imagination. JUMP seems like a pop song, it's commercial rock that's all. A lot of their music is blues based really.

The Smiths-I don't know anyone who would class these as a pop band, they are a prototype 80's indie band.

The Beatles- If their latter output came out in the 70's, they would probably be classed as a rock band. Their earlier output virtually defined pop music, so unfortunately;we have to give them a pop tag.

Pop music is music that the general populace listens to and erabraces for as long as it catches their interest. People who like pop music (and pop music only), listen to music on a purely entertainment level, and rarely listen for musical/lyrical prowess, musical ideals, musicianship, ideology etc. That is why it is pop music. The banRAB I have quoted did'nt (just) make recorRAB for profit/entertainment.

^ I know a lot of people who feel the same.

Why do people turn their scrobbling off when they listen to something that they think might be erabarrassing? Who cares about being cool or hip or whatever. Don't be ashamed of what you listen to.

^^^^
90125 was the first YES album I heard and I still love it. What a culture shock it was when I heard their early stuff-which I like too. I do need to get more of their stuff. I only have CLOSE TO THE EDGE and TORMATO from their 70's output.

I like most of the stuff by JT, and Fergie, and most the other stuff you hear on the radio draws you in for a minute, and then you realize it's all formulaic, and the music has no redeemable qualities.

I think that if you have a good general understanding of music and genres, then certain banRAB you listen to will not fit into your usual listening criteria and maybe similar banRAB you would absolutely detest. Most of the banRAB mentioned by people are more than likely loved for nostalgia reasons.

Take one of mine for example-SAXON. They play standard classic two guitar heavy metal. Their lyrics are the usual British metal cliches-battles, warriors, girls, rocking the night etc. They have no hugely redeeming features. The vocalist is distinctive but not the world's best. Their line up has constantly changed and the musicians are merely adequate. Yet I really like them because I associate them with a certain time in my life. So yes I am erabarressed to like them but i still do.

I don't think anyone would be insulted by your post, it's a perfectly valid point.

@ Music Man.
Ha! You started a Nugent statement with "The hard fact" hahaha.

and @ Urban.
I own a manowar album..................

I am not the least bit erabarrassed to say I can sing every word to that song and I have made up a dance to that I preform in front of the bathroom mirror
