Greek and Roman Culture?

What conditions allowed each (Greek and Roman) of these cultures to grow and become dominant during their particular epochs? What outside influences may have contributed to either the growth or decline of these cultures?

From the looks of all the monuments, same culture & way of life as they are like brothers in the same period of time but soon turn enemy.
They made the wrong friends, did the wrong trades and surrendered to much temptations of their world to create hatred & loves to end up destroying their civilisation in glory to just what it is today. History always repeat itself.

Greece was a major empire because had a lot of trading because of it's islands, and it had olives that were used for a lot of things like cooking, lamp oil, perfume etc.

The greek's downfall was the romans taking over and civil war for power.

rome grew because of it's military plans and strategies.

it's decline was because of the punic wars, both hannibal and the romans burned crops so the other would starve. this led to the farmers going broke, and the rich buying goods from elsewhere and the merchants going broke. and eventually this led to less and less money among the romans and the rest is history.

The greatest theory on why the Roman and the Greek Cultures flourished was due to their advancement in technology. The Greeks particular knack for sailing and trading helped them expand their trading empire beyond Greece into the Fertile Crescent (now Israel, Iran, Sudan, and other middle eastern countries). The Greeks also produced goods that could be traded for other goods. Egypt was known for their ability to produce a lot of grain and foods and some gold.

Rome rose to glory because of their technology like roads which allowed them to expand troops over large territories and add to their empire. Advancements in technology for war also made them a huge force to defend off. Most northern countries hadn't had the technology to ward them off. Also Rome had a huge army composed of allies and slaves from all over the empire. Rome's might was it's key. Greese was it might, knowledge and location.
