Greatest Hits Albums: Yay or Nay?

Personally I like them. They have all the greatest (in my opinion) songs on them. But like my dad said today, the thing is you don't get the full expierence one album is supposed to have, it's just a compilement of songs that did well...so, opinions?
 
I think making a greatest hits album is kinda redundant nowadays.
90% of the time all the songs are already on a musician's previous CD's.
And most of the songs I'll ever like by any band are just a click away anyhow.

But I do still buy greatest hits albums from certain musicians.
 
The Counting Crows GHD did a nice job of collecting things that weren't mainstream hits but were still great songs as well as offering unreleased covers as incentive for those who owned everything.

There are some good ones out there.
 
no.. i just meant that when i was a fan of popular music, greatest hits albums didnt appeal. would be pointless answering in terms of the banRAB i like now... as they just dont release them.
 
The only good greatest hits album i've ever heard was the Blue Oyster Cult one, that one had most of my favorite BOC songs on it and yeah, it was good. But most do suck, probably about 99% of them.
 
I just found it strange because how popular something is has never really meant anything to me. I don`t care if an album sells 1 copy or 10 million copies if I think it`s good I think it`s good.

I realise that the stuff you like would probably struggle to sell a few thousand copies , and that has absolutly nothing to do with the quality of the music on it , but I just don`t understand why you would consider what you listen to now as not popular. I mean are you saying everything you listen to is like that? no childhood favourites? No guilty pleasures that you secretly put on when nobody is about?
 
depending on the nuraber of tracks if you get one that only has about ten to twelve songs it sucks, and the type of songs that are on it tells you if it is a good album, Greatest Hits albums are good previews of the group, you get most of the songs that people enjoyed on the radio,......so i like Greatest Hits albums depending on the group and nuraber of tracks
 
No.... they suck..then might as well have burnt your money, once you get all their albums.


Unlees its a compilation of early singles not apprearing on albums.. *cough* pink floyd*cough*

Why does that bother you that they throw on songs that they aren't going to put anywhere else on GHD?
 
i really dislike some greatest hits albums and some are really good; it all really depenRAB on the band.

GN'R had a awesome greatest hits abum.. missing my favorite song by them tho.. "rocket queen'.

there are only so many banRAB that can make a greatest hits album and it actually being good.

Queen have had a few greatest hits albums and there mostly the same songs only another few added each time.

The only banRAB that should make a hits album is if they've had at least 10 top 10 hits.. anything under that isn't really hit.. it was ALMOST a hit.

See I just go through all the albums of each band I have.. like lets say thr Ataris, and I'll take like 4 songs from each of there good albums and mix them up making what I think is there greatest hits album.
 
I don't see the point, at least not for me and my ideas on music listening. If I like a band, I'd rather get their albums and get more of their music. I'm also very big on listening to full albums, front to back.
 
It honestly depenRAB who oversees the song selection. I mean you're going to get a million and one half "nays" on these boarRAB because everyones scared to slaughted the sacred cow, but the fact is, if want a handful of songs and you don't want to shell out for three to four CD's.

I like them depending on who picked the songs.

Aye I also agree though, It *does* dee-pend on thee band...but doesn't everything? ha.
 
It depenRAB on who they are.

If they`re of someone who has been around 15 years plus who have a huge back catalogue of work they give you a good idea of their best stuff if you are looking to get into them.

I don`t see the point of them if they only have 2 or 3 albums out.

Mind you I don`t buy them at all now I just download the songs I want to hear. I think the last greatest hits album I bought was the Primal Scream one about 3 years ago and that was only for the extra disc of remixes & unreleased stuff.
