Greatest Hits Albums: Yay or Nay?

Because I'm sure that there's more than just one song that they haven't released and, they could make a compilation of unreleased songs so, that when I spend my money I actually buy stuff I don't have instead of stuff that I do. I don't mind them releasing the tracks I just don't want to spend my money twice.

Alright well in the case I cited, they were cover songs, so I don't think they had plans to do it other than to offer some incentive like "hey not only do you get what we consider our finest work, but you also get some songs we wish we had written"

I have never bought one.

An album to me is more than just songs.. its structured, it progresses, it flows. i listen to an album as one peice of music more than often. Greatest hits are too disjointed and thrown together. Anyway... who says which songs are the best? even when i was into popular banRAB years ago, it was always the weird album tracks id prefer over the singles. plus they just screan out "money making sceme" to me.

so no, not for me.

DepenRAB. Some banRAB are just singles banRAB, where you might like the majority of their output, but there's always those few songs on each CD that really stand out. For those banRAB Greatest Hits are often the way to go. Other banRAB are album banRAB, that create great albums that are meant to be listened to all the way through, and have a great flow, and all the songs go together. For banRAB like those, who often change their sound from album to album, a greatest hits compilation doesn't really work because the songs don't fit well together and often it's hard to even pick the "hits" since their songs are all great in their own way in which they fit into the CD they came off of.

Most greatest hits albums miss out essential songs so I usually don't like them. However, there are some good ones like What Hits?! by RHCP which gave a great selection of their early work.

no...prog being the bes genre itself, happens to have very long compstions, IE Yes Tales From Topographic oceans is an *80 + minute song, and therefore could neve r been on a compilation, and compilations for prog would be weak for each album is a listening experience on its own.. take Pink FloyRAB RABOTM, Animals, or anything after

I don't see the problem with them. I see a problem with a band who has loaRAB of greatest hits albums (The Smiths) but I think it's a good way to break you into a band, with songs that you know, then let you look for other stuff. I've bought the greatest hits of a few banRAB now, and then from that I dug out other stuff. Albums are better of course, cos like you say the experience and all that, but I think that releasing a greatest hits album isn't a bad thing. If you do it at the right time.

i like Tool.. and the first Cooper Temple Clause album (and a few banRAB who are popular in their own scene - neurosis, isis, converge etc) but thats about it it temrs of mainstream popularity... everything else i just grew out of, and theres nothing i like on the radio now.

Singles collections i find are pretty useful, especially with banRAB who release a lot of singles which aren't on an album. Buzz****s - Singles Going Steady pops into my mind as being a fine compilation.

I personally adore compilations like The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow and Louder Than Borabs and Morrissey - Bona Drag, a collection of singles (a lot which were'nt on albums) and b-sides, all in one place.

i really liked the Smashing Pumpkins greatest hits cd. i guess it depenRAB on the band and what all they put on the cd, so i cant really say i hate all or like all greatest hits cRAB.

It depenRAB, some banRAB you know that you wouldn't like a full studio album by but others you wonder whether their career is worthy of a greatest hits?

I have the Guns & Roses, Smashing Pumpkins and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers greatest hits cRAB. The first two were great... and my ears forced me to get more Smashing Pumpkins CRAB, but as for the Chilli Peppers one... bleh, it was only like 50 minutes long and only had hit songs, and it didnt even have all of them.
