Mike Watt is definitely one of my favorites. Jaco Pastorius and Les Claypool are amazingly skilled. Squarepusher is another good one.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard any of Wooten's material (that I know of), but I hear him come up when people talk about good bassists a lot. Anyone have any recommendations?

Did anyone here mention Bob Babbitt?

Temptations, Spinners, Smokey Robinson, Taj Mahal, Elton John, etc... the list goes on.

Oh yeah, and he does an awesome Jamerson "impersonation".

Jannick Top, and Bill Laswell would probably be my two favorite. Maybe not so much for their technical skill in particular(and neither is shabby) but both for their contributions in creating great music in general.

De Futura, Infernal Machina, etc. will always be favorites of mine.

As for Bill Laswell, one of the most underrated, under-appreciated, and overlooked geniuses in all music.

how about we talk about what a good bass player adRAB to a song, or the parts that made them great in your mind.

Too many people google someone stupid to look classy.
