Google continues to ignore music player

G1, myTouch, Magic, Droid...Nexus.
All these "Google" phones with the stock Android have the same paltry music player. I especially hear this from Droid users as many have dumped the iPhone for it.

Why has Google not developed something which should be a core part of the operating system? Even a Blackberry has a bass boost or graphic equalizer (presets) available. to win more customers in Android you can't ignore something that the iPhone is excelling at, Google!

and end rant.

Agree

The stock music player needs a serious overhaul. Even something as simple as play by genre and a back button on the widget would be a start!!

Has anybody seen an Android music player with source code available, or supporting plug-ins? I have some ideas I'd like to add, but don't want to re-invent the wheel by writing a whole player from scratch.

the android market music players don't solve the audio quality problem. they might make it more fun as far as interface but function or audio quality still sucks. ie, no bass boost, audio boost, graphic EQ.

But an MP3 would only get close to sounding like that in a studio with audio equipment that costs several times most people's annual wage.

The little cheap-as-possible amplifier in a mobile phone, combined with ear-bud headphones that simply don't have the bass response, due to their small size, of a huge studio bass speaker, simple don't perform as well. Hence it requires the user to adjust the audio to sound better on their own specific hardware.

This is why I don't really use my G1 as my main music device. No standard headphone jack (can you say 'doh!'?), shabby music player, and no real way to sync it...blegh. iMusic is wonderful though!

Overall, my experience with Android hasn't been what I expected it to be when I first got the G1. The Nexus looks cool, but the way G and TMo have screwed the early adopters over isn't working with me....

Sorry for the minirant!

Apparently, the Fender Limited Edition MyTouch comes with an "Enhanced Music Player"... I bought the phone this morning, I will let you guys know what enhancements it has.

i used the mt fender edition. the music player is "enhanced" in that it looks prettier and uses a cover flow like browsing option but there are still no settings for the audio. I blame HTC for that. duhh its a music phone.
so, the audio is still flat.

i do like the behold 2's music player. it actually HAS EQ but fails in that the virtual keyboard can be pulled up and wont allow you to search for a song with it (known bug). behold 2 is also customized with the samsung touchwiz interface molded into android.

standard google android os has the worst music player. blech.

well ill be darned MOTOROLA just added an update to its Android music player for the Milestone in Europe when android 2.01 came out. it now has an Equalizer! Hey google anybody home? would be nice to have this on the Droid.

At least the Cliq I have might get this kind of update in the future. Maybe the VZW people with the Droid tool

I wonder if there are any new developments. I know the new beta of Astro Music player in the market has a manual EQ, but the music player sucks. Hopefully someone makes a really good useable one soon. Or, you know, Google actually does something themselves. (i can dream).

People are putting the Milestone's default music player on the Droid (it has preset EQ settings). I tried to put the .apk on my Nexus but its the same name internally as the default music player. I didn't want to ruin my phone by removing it to try some unknown port from the Milestone.

I'm half way close to just writing a new music player which uses a custom C backend thanks to the new SDK call outs.

It's not exactly rocket science. Things people want:
- Equalizer
- Cover art
- Search that works
- Playlist
- Gapless playback option

Hmm... might be worth the time.

I might take that challenge. I'm investigating the Android NDK to see how far I can expose it. I already know some decent C libs for playback, I just need to make sure it can tie into Android. Also, I want to get an idea about how large of an app this is going to be.
