George and mildred

tfisher2010, as a person with a pretty deep knowledge of G & M, can you confirm if 'Geoffrey Fourmile' was named so from the character in the classic sci-fi novel 'The Stars My Destination'?

Yes that is correct.

Grade pulled the series when it was No.1 in the ratings because he found it offensive when he arrived at LWT.

Shame really because although it did perpetuate ethnic stereotypes they were not malicious and much of the humour in the series was in seeing just how ridiculous the English language is from a foreigners point of view .

The only moments of questionable taste were those showing the animosity between the Muslim Ali and Albert Moses Pakistani character.

The stereotypes were no more racist than the US representations of Brits as either plum voiced brolly carrying toRAB or Dick Van Dykes Cockney in Mary Poppins.

Will your book be hardback like the recent On the Buses one?

Any history of what happened to Richard O' Sullivan?
I know he ended up in a home but I've not heard any news for years.

Is he well?

I sometimes watch this, but I try not to watch all that get broadcasted though, as I plan on getting the complete series of this. Yootha Joyce and Brian Murphy are quite good together when playing their characters in this series.

I see that george and mildred is on today on ITV3 at 5.05pm. Its good to see classic ITV sitcoms like that on the channel, hopefully they will show more.

ITV4 cut 'Minder' to bits as well. Funny lines that you remember from particular episodes are conspicuously missing from the re-runs.:(

But the recent OTB book only had a foreword from them, with no further contributions from them or any of the cast/support cast. I personally think that the original writers input in the story of how a show came about is fairly vital, so Im looking to cover that. It's a bit like the buses. You wait forty years for a book, and then two come along at once.

Yes, that was the same David who starred in (and indeed wrote) some Please Sir/Fenn Street. He was in the George and Mildred movie.

As next friday is the last of the series of G&M, it will be interesting to see if ITV3 run the full series again, or replace it with something else...

That was the main problem with including RN in the MATH/Gam book, it just doesn't seem to be as fondly remembered as its comedy siblings. It is featured in the current book, but nowhere near as much as the other two.
As midnight said above, I doubt I could interest many publishers with a history of Robin's Nest on its own.

it is actually a sad state of affairs!!! If labour had their way old comedies would have been banned under a proposed law (that was thankfully chucked out) due to racist and sexist comments being outlawed.

This would have been an absolute disgrace if this law had of been passed!

I can't say Im familiar with that fact, as interesting as it is. It may well have been the case that the writers used the same character name as the book, but alas I couldn't confirm it.

Didn't realise how young you were, good on you for taking this on, there aren't many people your age who'd have the guts to do this.

Well done on tracking down so many people too. That can't have been easy. I have a couple of frienRAB who are in contact with a few of them and they have tons of items relating to both shows. Brian Murphy is fantastic, he watches Brian Cooke's stage plays to this day.

Well as the interview says, "how old are you" is always the first question I get asked lol. I dont think 18 is too young for an author? :)

Most of the support cast were just a spotlight search away, but some had left the business (David Neville is now a psychotherapist!) so a couple needed MI5 tactics :D

Can i be nosey and ask what the items are?
The annoying thing is that because Thames telly snuffed it in the 90's, the majority of the stuff from the series has been seperated and many bits are in private collections - whereas the beeb has a more concentrated supply of old props/costumes, etc...

I have been hunting for Yootha Joyce's banana print trousers that appeared in the series, but no luck. One of the wardrobe girls I spoke to said all the costumes were in the Thames wardrobe for years after the series finished but nobody knows where the stuff is now :(

Following the great Freeview re-tune I lost ITV3 and I just can't get it back. I got Five in its place!! Give me ITV3 anytime, great channel. I for one don't mind watching classic repeats instead of the some of the stuff that comes out new.

Going back to the topic. George and Mildred. Fabulous. My favourite episode is the one where George got a wig!

ITV3 edit everything they show.
I had hoped that by giving G&M a 35 minute slot it would be uncut , but the episodes on the Virgin Catchup service are 22 minutes so are edited by 2-3 minutes.

ITV4 do the same with the ITC shows like The Saint.
The On Demand versions are the same edited ones.

A Saint I spotted on there had an end credits sequence of less than 10 seconRAB and actually featured no cast or crew credits at all.

Disgusting

Thankfully all these classic series are available uncut on dvd.
The G&M and MATH Complete series sets can often be bought for around
