Why do people in anime always make "happy" noises when they eat something tasty? Listening to characters mummble "Num num num num" under their breath completely ruins serious moments for me.

I thought this was interesting so I searched it and found this:

AV is easily available in Japan, and there are even vending machines for them on the street, although as a nod to the protection of minors the display is covered with a photo-sensitive material to black it out during the daylight hours.

From the AV entry here. If porn is that accessible and they sell H-Manga at anywhere from bookstores to convenient stores, I would imagine Hentai anime would be just as easy to find, probably even in general cd/video places.

Are cousin relationships normal in Japan? ie. Elfen Lied.

I was actually wondering about that. It makes more sense if they're only related by name. But if they're blood relatives, then... well, that's kind of weird to me ^.^'.

Like what I've said before, Japanese is one of the few developed nations which allow marriage between first cousins (sharing same grandparents), while most developed nations only allow marriage between second cousins (sharing same great grandparents). The ratio of married first cousins is 1.8% among all married couples in Japan; none of developed countries in the report I saw has the ratio higher than 1% (IIRC, less than 0.5%, to be more exact).

I'm relatively new to manga (I've only bought one volume of Princess Tutu for my kid and just recently subsribed to Shoujo Beat 8O ) but I have heard of Yotsubato! I think I'll pick that one up!

Do that -- it's a fine series, the latest and best work by one of the finest mangakas.

@abunai, is the IO manga available in the US? Where could I get it? Also, can someone tell me what 'tankoubon' means? I suppose it means 'volume', but it's not in the lexicon.

I don't think so. I first became aware of IO through scanlations, and I've been buying it direct from Japan (the language is not a problem).

Yes, 単行本 (tankoubon) is more or less the equivalent of "volume". Specifically, it's a compilation of manga, usually by the same author, and usually from the same series. Most manga are published in serialized form, remember, and tankoubons represent the normal way to buy them in collected form, as volumes.

The volume thing is partially artificial, of course, since the serialized chapter form is the "natural" form. Though some mangaka (e.g. Mori Kaoru) may plan their chapter contents so that each compiled volume ends on a dramatic high point (a "cliffhanger"), others don't, taking the story chapter-by-chapter.

In the english dub of Naruto, what do they substitute 'dattebayo' for? I mean is there anything in particular they usually substitute it for, or do they just add extra dialogue to cover it up?

I don't have cable here so I can't watch it on CN.

I've only seen the first two episodes dubbed, but they add in "Believe it!" for Naruto's ~ttebayo tag phrase. I think it's acceptable, considering it didn't really have very much meaning to begin with.

You may have been directed to this post because you asked a question about "Will there be another season of some anime or another?" (Or "Will [series] be licensed & released in my area?") With this forum being associated with a major anime news site, we get many questions of this nature in the forums To conserve time and energy in typing the same response over and over again, I'm exploiting this post to provide a detailed answer to those questions.

ANN features an Encyclopedia with an extensive database of anime and manga. When Japanese studios announce their plans for sequels, it will be reported on ANN's front page, and the information for the sequel will be added to the Encyclopedia in due time. So before asking "will there be more of [series]?", please search for the series in the Encyclopedia to see if it has information on a sequel.

If there is not information about the sequel you're looking for in the Encyclopedia, please do NOT ask about it in the forums. I know you just saw a great anime and are hungrily searching for more. But keep in mind that the members of this forum are regular anime fans who don't have any special connections to the anime production industry. It's possible that some studio is planning to make a sequel to a given series, but if that sequel hasn't been officially announced, then we don't know any more than you do about the studios' plans. There have been many questions over the years about sequels to shows like Berserk, His & Her Circumstances, and School Rumble, so please understand that all these threads contribute to forum clutter and annoyance for moderators and longtime posters.

Note that all of this also applies to "Will X be licensed and released in [my language]?" questions. Just as we don't have insider knowledge of Japanese companies' plans, we also don't have insider knowledge of other anime distributors or what they plan to license. North American licenses get reported on ANN within days, hours, or even minutes of their announcement, so if something is licensed, chances are the Encyclopedia will reflect that.

tl; dr: Search the Encyclopedia for the sequel or license you're looking for; if the information isn't there, nobody on the forums will know about it either.

I was wondering how come on some dvds they have the vocies set on japanese as default and you have to change it while other are set on english right away.

I don't think there's any reason for that, they just put whatever they feel like as the default.

They don't just do this in Japanese cartoons either. In fact most cartoons food stuffing characters do this. As for the ruining the serious moments, it was probably there to lighten the mood anyhow. I am sure there are examples of anime where this doesn't occur though.

These questions aren't really that important, I was just curious. I was looking through one of those ad booklets that came with a DVD I recently got (Kiddy Grade File 1) and they quoted ANN a few times. I've looked the site and some of the forums relating to the series and I honestly can't find where they got them. Just wondering if anyone knew where they came from:

Fifteen minutes is all it took. After that, I was hooked... this is a grand adventure that shouldn't be missed.

I couldn't find it in the review. The review wasn't that favorable of it anyway.

but a lot of them don't follow the rules. Must not be inforced very much.

Also to put something like this in a vending machine, would reduce all shame at the point of purchase.

That question is about this food. I saw it several times in Animes, mostly in bentos. So my question: Does it really exist (i guess yes), and if so, whats its name, how does it taste and where does it grow? Is it popular (in Japan)?

I apologize if this question has already been asked/answered; I did not read through this entire thread. Anyway I have watched s-CRY-ed twice now (on Cartoon Network). I was wondering what the title means. If they mentioned it in the series, I missed it. Also, how do you pronounce it.... Is it s-cry-ed, or do you say it all together, like 'skrid or skred'?

The Anime Characters mostly have those light rings/shapes around their head/ hair. Is it sth. similar like those big eyes on the characters? What are the animators try to show us with those light shapes? The lightreflection??? in room / outside?

They're just highlights from the sun/light on the character's head. Not much else to it.

I think this might have already been adressed in the Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni thread, but I'm only three episodes in and that thread is so loaded down with spoilers I don't think I'll be able to stop myself from reading them. I like this series to much to want to spoil it for myself. Why is the Na part always written in red? If the reason behind this is directly explained in the series, just tell me that this is also a spoiler since I'd like to see for myself.
