Gateway laptop stuck on aquiring network address -wireless?

reinstalled network adapter and broadcom network utility and yet the computer can not connect even though connection stregnth is excellent it can not aquire the address.... Im not good with computers so would need instructions to repair broken down... Computer is a gatway MA7 laptop running windoqs xp home edition
