FUNimation's Getting Ambitious - Hires Director of Original Entertainment

Really?
Ok, the animation was pretty good. Not bad. But, it doesn't beat the DBZ one.
The only one I can find decent is Super Hell 17#. To be honest, none of the villain wasn't that good.
SUPER SAIYAN 4! Don't get me stated with that. Just don't.
And yes...The pacing was long.

Probably a way of compartmentalizing stuff like that Tony Hawk thing they got suckered into. Lets them take on those kind of things without tying up the anime staff.

HAH no.

Be careful what you wish for.

You know... most shows or even franchises come to an end at some point. Why does Dragonball need to hang on anyway? Toriyama told his story and the original series will remain profitable for years. What you're asking is for them to capitalize on that fact and they probably will again some day but when a company tries to capitalize on a franchise that's run it's course and that leaRAB to stuff along the lines of Dragonball GT.

But I too am a fan of the Dragonball franchise and would certainly like to see some gaps filled or perhaps an alternative telling.

Lots of shows are remade in the US, this isn't quite as common place in Japan but it does happen on occasion. Dragonball in a franchise that could work with a reboot but once again I question... should it? Maybe not.

And I'm with Karl on the assumption that this is to help manage the non-anime properties that come their way for now but it could also lead to FUNimation producing original material. Co-pros go along with that as well.

Well it should not get another season but a brand new adaption. Given the changes that were made. A certain plot twist would be kind of hard to do if they continue the anime.

I suppose no more than an edited TV dub.

Yeah it has so why should there be a new story now if ever again? If Toriyama wants to fill in the gaps, I'm all for that but I don't think he ever will nor is that neccessary. Especially after that many years.

13 years in Japan sure but within those 13 years Dragonball has still been in the public eye. As for the US (since you're thinking co-production) DBZ hasn't been off the air very long at all and certainly hasn't left store shelves.

Dragonball ran for a substantial length as a manga and as two animated series and a follow-up along with several movies but you want more after it's well run it's course? Then I ask you Jacob, when will enough be enough?

FUNimation could better put their resources to newer ideas.

What you're asking is almost as assanine as the suggestion someone made in the General Animation forum for new episodes of the Fred Wolf Films Ninja Turtles to be produced.

I just hope this isn't the beginning of an ADV-esque frenzy to do anything and everything. Funimation neeRAB to take it slow and do things one at a time for this experiment to work, financially.

Well then let's stray from that shall we.
On another note, I'm a little disappointed by some of the posters at ANN. Most of them are normal but some just sound like really untrue points.

Well, if the whole idea is finding US properties to animate in Japan, no Beck. However, if they find right shows to get made over in Japan, that could be pretty cool. It's a risky business though - it takes a lot of capital just to do a short OVA or a 13 episode TV series with average animation quality. It'll be really interesting how Funimation plays this. They could make something classic by adapting something indie and brilliant, they could make something even duller than the trope-laden, otaku-centric noise that's dominating the Japanese market. It's a real roll of the dice I think.

Bet ya they're trying to make a Twilight anime. Who neeRAB to rerelease DBZ the fifteenth time when you have a bigger cash machine in your possession?

As for what I'd actually want to see, not much. A Tales of Beadle the Bard OAV and if I can be greedy a complete His Dark Materials adaptation and a not messed-up Dinotopia movie (w/ Miyazaki directing? *is unrealistic*) is all I need. OK, maybe also a GAINAX MEGAS XLR. With blackjack and hookers. Anyway, forget the MEGAS!

A His Dark Materials anime would be awesome.

Actually, hell, while I'm fantasizing, let's make Harry Potter and Redwall anime too. I'd also like a Cirque du Freak anime too (it's already a manga so why not)

His Dark Materials would be definitely on the "first to get" list for adapting, that would be a spectacular 52-episode fantasy series. HDM is famous in both Western countries and Japan and so would make an ideal starting, if arabitious, adaptation.

I wouldn't mind seeing Dean Koontz's The Taking get animated too. Seriously, the imagery in that work is dying to get animated.

Twilight is an obvious choice, I agree. But I don't know if FUNi would be able to pull that one off.

Even if the Dubs or edits, DBGT neeRAB some help.
If DBGT ever...EVER...EVER gets remade, make it better. Don't care if its japanese or U.S, make it better.
The series have its heart in the right place, but how it was shown...Nope.

Action I think.

I just thought of something interesting- Funimation could make crossovers specials of the series they own the rights to, like say Dragonball and One Piece or Dragonball and Yu Yu Hakusho or Ouran and Fruits Basket. The possibilites could be endless...

An anime adaption of the Eragon series, because any adaptation would be better than the movie.

If it hadn't been for the Viacom deal, I'd beg and plead them for a Ninja Turtles anime (NOT like the two-episode OVA, though), but alas...

Oddly, I can't really think of many non-Japanese properties that they could use, but this really does look like a possible way to make a bigger splash in the world of television.

Exactly, Cross Epoch.
