FUNimation's Getting Ambitious - Hires Director of Original Entertainment

I'm not kidding anyone here.

Any thoughts as to what might transpire out of this hiring and what kind of original properties may come out of this? FUNi has strong relationships with GONZO, TMS, and BONES so it is conceivable they might get something done with any of those studios. It is saying that the titles will be based on "major intellectual properties" so presumably FUNi's focus will be on adapting significant American books/films/comics/etc. into animation.

Shin Chan is still going... so... why would they do that? Furthermore it hasn't been a breakout hit for them.

Working with TOEI for a new Dragonball animation might be interesting but entirely unneccessary.

In any event, they have actually done "original entertainment" before. It was during their pre 2000-2001 incarnation (they once made a show called "C.Y.B.O.A.R.S." which wasn't an anime; I forget what it's about, though). You see, they weren't an anime company originally. I don't think that was their original intention. That said, if they do start making original shows, they may not necessarily hire Japanese studios for the animation. Most importantly, these potential original shows may not even be "anime" either.

Anyhow, this could really mean anything, so it's really best not to speculate or to even expect anything to even come from this, at least, not until there's more information.

I will say this much. There's no way I will watch an "anime" (i.e., with the distinctive art style, etc) created just for American viewers, regardless of whether it has "original" or existing characters (however, that goes into another discussion which isn't appropriate here)...

Hmmm, just keep Dragonball the same. I really don't want to see a re-coloring animation like DBKai is.

But, taking all the filler parts out? Sure, why not. But it better be NEW animation. Photoshop the series doesn't mean new animation.

And i perfer cell color animation than on the computer, at times.
But, if the animation is NEW, than fine. But cutting and re-coloring things, thats not NEW animation to me.
Thats...Lazy.

Anyways, the idea FUNi wanting to do animation is a GREAT idea.

How about another DBZ movie? Something along the lines of the first three movies would be great.

Then again, it would probably end up starring Super Saiyan 3 Broly. Darn.

Anyway I wouldn't be surprised if Funimation chose to focus on something set in the west.

I'd rather they step away from DBZ. I think it'd be great if they could push for another Shakespear adaption. RomeoxJuliet was really good.

Aside from my own feelings that Toei would've learned their lesson, and as many flaws as Dragon Ball GT has, I would love for new Dragon Ball, no matter the quality. In 11 years we've gotten all of one 35 minute special, which was utterly hilarious. So long as this new special brought that and the Kikuchi score to the table I'd--and probably quite a few others--would be all over supporting it. Toei should know this, I'm sure FUNimation does.

All the more for fan fic writers to toy with.

Speaking of anime adaptations of plays, I have only five worRAB: The Phantom of the Opera.

For goRAB sakes, I hope they work with Toei to FINALLY make a Cross Epoch (the Dragon Ball/One Piece crossover that Toriyama and Oda worked on) special. I mean, now more than ever, it'd make perfect sense to do one.

But otherwise...hmm...this is interesting. Not sure what significant properties they could really adapt, but still interesting...

One step closer to a possible (widely-seen) television block ala 4KiRAB (but better)?

Or Fruit's Basket.

Yes, this is perhaps the best chance for Cross Epoch to happen....or just a Dragon Ball/One Piece crossover at all.

As for the other thing, would I want more Dragon Ball even after the lesson I learned from GT?....Yeah.

Animation: Killer
Villain: Okay
Super Saiyan 4: Awesome
Pacing: Looooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnggg.

It didn't even have an "this is an adaptation" to work with.
