Funimation "Roll-out Riot" Talkback

Heck, while I'm dreaming, I'd want to own the Detroit Metal City movie.

Since they have the license, they could probably pick up the Higurashi movie...though I heard it sucked....

I am happy all of you guys loved the announcment today. For me their week has been named by me to be the troll out riot. Nothing I wanted besides FLCL was announced.

I am eagerly awaiting the announcement that FUNimation is getting out of the anime business.

. . .

You guys are aware this is light-hearted sarcasm, right? RIGHT?

They should pick up Higurashi Kai, not the live-action movie!

Oh well, it's been confirmed that the next two days will have anime announcements. So yay.

Prediction for tomorrow's announcement: Funi licenses more episodes of Degrassi for distribution on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Hey, I can join on the "Funi's getting more live-action craze" too.

Kamui might be one to keep an eye on. Looks like it's actually based on the manga Kamui Gaiden (a.k.a. The Legend of Kamui), which was released by Viz at one point.

To GWOtaku concerning Xam'd and PSN: The whole reason as to why it was a rental (and a dollar extra per episode) is because it was a Sony exclusive and the only way to catch the show legally anywhere, since America got the first 13 episodes before Japan got them and didn't debut on Japanese television until April 11, 2009 - 2 1/2 months after the final episode debuted on US and Japanese PSN stores. Digital rights are a different beast; that's why you have GONG listed as the distributor of Ikki Tousen S1 on Hulu and YouTube and Funimation for DTO services like iTunes and Zune Video (formerly Xbox Live Video Marketplace). Same with the original Robotech, Gurren Lagann and any Ani-Monday show outside of Gundam 00 pegged as Manga titles on PSN, Hulu, and iTunes, and that applies to Monster as well. Heck, that's why I suggested Funi would get Xam'd, especially since they snatched a title I thought was going to be a Media Blasters property in Robogeisha (previous experience with creators). The only catch would be for Xam'd is that it would never show up on Zune Video for the 360 owners to buy.

To Garfield15: Since Viz is just going to sit on it, yeah. Might as well get another movie starring Ken'ichi Matsuyama in this roll-out.

Also, to address Envy II: Has this roll-out ever been addressed or advertised by Funi as an anime-only event before January 3, 2010? From what I read, no. Is the roll-out riot a part of some anime convention? No. Did Funimation debut a live-action movie a couple of weeks ago on Blu-ray and DVD simultaneously? Yes. If Funimation announced the Shaw Bros. movies at AX, I would complain a little. However, the roll-out riot is the equivalent to Comic-Con (NY or SD). There's something for everyone. And, while Funi does bill itself as an anime company on its website, we should know better.
BTW, Detroit Metal City is awesome. You have not lived until you seen the guy who played L in metal makeup engage in an "F-Off" with Gene Simmons. Or L in a ridiculous haircut.

Mow, that we got anime in our roll-out, we can await tomorrow's announcement without controversy. Hopefully.

That's more like it. It's about time people can buy FLCL for less than $5-10 per episode. Hey, the first anime announcement was one of the two rescues I guessed, wasn't it? Nice. I already have Synch-Point's 3 DVRAB, but this is great news for people who don't, and another great title for FUNi to add to their roster. I wouldn't be surprised if they announced a rescue of the Evangelion series and EoE, either later this week or some other time.

Count me in with the others for no redub of FLCL, even though that is highly unlikely.

That makes me wonder though about Synch-Point's other anime acquistion: Tenshi ni Narumon. Shall FUNi step in to rescue that as well sometime in the future, or will it let it languish in an incomplete status some more? Hm....

Hoping for Wulin Warriors for today's announcement btw.

Unless there's a right's issue I can't imagine Funi wanting to spend money to dub something that is already dubbed very well. If it was a lousy dub, well, maybe.

Hetalia, from the economic stand point, is probably the biggest announcement of the week, or atleast it should be. It'll be very interesting to see if a show with such a predominantly fujoshi fandom works well in North America. Excellent pick up on Funimation's part though.

Hopefully, Blacksmith is just the prelude to pulling other Manglobe shows. However, given the dates they are talking about for shows now, even if we got a spring announcement for Michiko, we might be looking at a 2011 release.

It's kind of sad that Michiko is the only Manglobe show without a license currently, and it's also the only show that would have any chance of being a mainstream hit. I guess all the distribution companies have given up on the mainstream now that they've clued in to the fact Cartoon Network is no longer their friend and are just sticking to smaller-yet-safer fandom-guaranteed-but-not-much-chance-with-anyone-else releases, just perpetuating the downward spiral...

After the hint dropped during FUNiCon 2.0, it was pretty obvious that they'd announce Hetalia during this.

Other than the FLCL rescue (which doesn't really affect me unless I decide to double-dip), there were no announcements I cared about this week. I'm a little disappointed, especially after last year, but FUNimation is still doing great, and I know we'll hear plenty of bigger and better announcements throughout 2010!

Hetalia! Awesome, I made a thread about this show a few months ago, but now all Americans can enjoy the insanity.

Alright Funi, cast Vic Mignogna as Italy and Chris Sabat as Germany and we're set. Not that it matters much at this point, I'm more surprised they even managed to pick up period.

And Vic neeRAB to dub over the ending song, no excuses.
