Funi has Dragonball Kai (Confirmed)

That doesn't pardon them from being called out on it. For the past year, globally, Dragon Ball Kai has been the name of this fourth series. I'd suspect tossing a 'Z' in there will only further bring confusion.

I don't see the big deal. The arcs that Kai covers have always been released under the "Dragonball Z" label, and this is just a natural extension of that. It's far too late to drop the DBZ label by now. If anything, dropping the Z would just make people think Kai is an adaptation of the first arcs and cause more confusion.

Which is...the twenty year old animation, reedited to move along quicker, work with a completely different musical style and with shots traced over digitally with different colors, less detail, and altered backgrounRAB. Not to mention a cast with a dozen or so recasts from the voices fans have known for decades.

Same story. Same characters. This is Dragonball Z.

That has nothing to do with the subject. Dragon Ball Z is what is it, Dragon Ball Kai is something totally different when you sit down and watch them.

No, it's not. The general narrative and intentions are still the same. Would you consider a letterboxed version of a film as a different film?

At this point it's just another on a long laundry list of inane things FUNimation has done with Dragon Ball.

The fact that Funimation is releasing this along with the Dragon Boxes seems like good enough evidence that they care deeply about the franchise. I can name hundreRAB of other shows that got worse treatments than Dragonball.

I really don't think anyone will be confused. Heck, the point is arguably to clarify that it's abridged DBZ to super casual fans that don't pay attention to details. I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree on this.

I don't deny that Kai's presentation is very different, but abridged works and remakes aren't all the same. In this case characters and all significant events in the story are largely unchanged, rendering Kai even less revisionist than the Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy.

Well in the DBZ seasons 1 & 2 redubs, particularly those filler episodes with the invisible ship (which thankfully won't be in Kai) her voice is a mixed bag. At times it works, other times she sounRAB like a whiny young teenage girl. But overall Tiffany's done a mostly alright job.

Man, I hope not all the dub cast in DBZ change. Keep Sean Schemmel, keep Sonny Strait, keep Christopher Sabat, and keep Mike McFarland. I really don't want to see the whole cast change. Since DBKai is pretty much like DBZ (But with edits), I'm hoping to see the whole dub cast come back.

While I had made claims that I will be buying Dragon Ball Kai it likely would be a little bit down the road. As much as 'GoRABend' as Dragon Ball Kai might appear to be it is still rididdled with its own issues beyond the censoreship. A quicker pace means nothing in the digital age where one can easily skip what they don't want to watch. The digital tracing done to most of the scenes make those scenes still out like a sore thurab and often don't look any better, which makes for an awful corabination as it becomes even more evident that the animation sucks. Then there is the less than captivating music and out-of-left-field recasts, which while not terrible have made for some uncomfortable episodes, espicially when corabined with some of the returning actors' lack of effort (Hiromi Tsuru's Bulma).

What does this all mean? [Strike]You should all be watching Lost instead.[/Strike]

The cover art's gonna have to be pretty dang spiffy if it wants to capture me. Oh, and for the love of God, stop putting your two disc releases in two thinpacks, FUNimation. It needlessly complicates the packaging.

I'm all for him keeping Piccolo but he should do a more natural voice for him. Which would probably sound even more like Zoro now. He should keep Shenron as well. Yamcha, Vegeta and the rest of his roles should be recast to more appropriate actors now that FUNimation has a much larger pool to pull from. Hopefully they don't have Linda Young return as Frieza. Other than that I'm fine with the majority of the previous dub cast.

I see you didn't reply to my previous comment Jacob so I say again if the Z bothers you so much write them and tell them why they shouldn't modify the name. Especially if you don't think it's Toei's doing (which it very well could be, they did seemingly mandate the logo change for One Piece).

Walmart.com has both the Blu-Ray and DVD of Season One Part One of Dragonball Z Kia up already with a release date of 5/18/2010.

....wow. That and FMA Brotherhood in the same month, eh?

That is fast. I'm now left more interested/concerned in how they're dubbing it, though. I wonder how long they've been working on this?

But the problem is important parts are mixed in with the filler in DBZ. For anyone who wants to watch Goku battle Freeza, how the heck do they know which Z eps to skip and which ones to watch? All the important stuff is scattered around those last 30 Namek episodes. What is someone to do, watch 5 minutes in the middle of an ep, fast forward and go to the next episode?

Meanwhile, Kai shows you EXACTLY what the important parts of the Freeza fight are.

I don't view those as negatives really, the Japanese cast has gotten old.

I agree with you overall, but honestly, I'll be very, very surprised if Freeza is re-casted.

Maybe someone should send them an e-mail and ask who is playing Freeza.

And yet, the creators of this fourth series felt it was unnecessary to have a 'Z' in there.

It's an adaptation of a piece of Dragon Ball's story. Just as Dragon Ball Z was.

Your comparison isn't valid because there's a lot that adRAB up to making Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Kai different products. There is 'filler' in Dragon Ball Z but that is inherently a part of the story of Dragon Ball Z, not the Dragon Ball story it is adapted from, but a part of that 291 behemoth nonetheless.

Their treatment, as often and much as it has enraged the fans, continually makes them money no matter what they do. Just look at the Orange Brick debacle.

Ya know I actually like goku and krillin's VA's so I actually don't mind this. But for Chris it is time for a Kayne West joke. Hey Chris, I am happy with you being Zoro in One Piece and all but anyone could do better in the roles you play in the dragon ball z dub!

That would be impossible, considering contracts and all. I had a friend who couldn't tell a word in what he voiced and he was an extra in Tower of Druaga. Only an official announcement will we know.

The comment was directed towarRAB fans who are already familiar with the series.

One doesn't necessarily have to skip entire episodes, either. But alas, there's really no saying "just put up with it."

I'd say "watch Dragon Ball Z to watch Dragon Ball Z, don't watch Dragon Ball Kai to watch Dragon Ball the comic" 'cause you ain't gonna get a completely fillerless version of the fight. It's pretty implausible.

And yet they continually did the video games which would likely take up more time than a few episodes of Dragon Ball Kai, but that's neither here nor there.

It took them long enough, thank God I didn't get the DragonBox dvRAB.

I really don't see the problem with adding in a "Z." It covers the Z portion of the series so I can understand why FUNi did it. Mind you the original manga was still called Dragonball but I rather have the Z since it comes off as a different series.
