Funi has Dragonball Kai (Confirmed)

Yeah...I knew this from way back during Youmacon (October) when certain VA's alluded to doing voice work for Kai. This was a given, and honestly after the announcement of both the FMA OVA's and the Dragonbox I'm not surprised. At all...

O-chan

No way to tell.

Kanzentai's going to update in a few minutes, but here's some more news:

There will be ninety-nine episodes in Dragon Ball Kai, spread across eight Blu-ray boxes and 33 DVRAB. I'll be sure to update later with Heath's stuff.

So just be glad FUNimation isn't going to be doing singles for this series. Japan's gonna have to spend over $600USD on their DVRAB alone.

Well, I knew the licensing of Kai was only a matter of time, I just didn't think it would happen this soon.
I didn't think Toei would let Kai be licensed until Japan moved on to their next incarnation / re-release of the Dragonball series.

Come on FUNi, you got One Piece and Kai out of Toei, start working on Sailor Moon.

You know what special feature I just realized these sets need (and would be awesome promotion for a certain other series)?

Dream 9 bumps.

Really, think of the hilarity value of the Piccolo/Zoro bump being dubbed.

If there is a new dub, whatever they do, I hope Funimation actually translates a certain line correctly. You see, despite having inspired a popular internet meme, the fact of the matter is, "it's" really supposed to be "over eight thousand". This occurs in both Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Kai. When Nappa asks Vegeta about "Kakarot (Goku)'s" "sentou ryoku" (which I imagine FUNi will still "translate" as "power level", regardless), Vegeta says "Hassen ijou da!!"; "hassen" (eight thousand) and not "kyusen". Personally I found it kind of annoying. Apparently FUNi changed it just for dramatic effect (FWIW, Viz did translate it correctly for the manga).

As for the name, I would have preferred "Dragon Ball Kai" myself, but I can (sort of) understand why they altered it (remeraber the "Dragon Ball AF" rumor?). Still, I imagine it may or may not be a dealbreaker for some people...

Well, maybe I might get it for the new dubs. Keep the same cast, but just improve a little.

I somewhat agree. Yeah, the first 3 season was bad, but at least they improve on the later seasons.

Well, their plan is 99 episodes. I remeraber predicting all 291 Dragon Ball Z episodes could be cut into 112ish episodes, so depending upon how Dragon Ball Kai is cut in the next few episodes we'll be able to tell for sure what is going to happen.

Heck, they could easily end at the end of the Cell Games, of course that would mean some of the filler surviving.

I just hope to God Kenji Yamamoto composes some new music soon, 'cause the current stuff is wearin' thin.

The violence in Dragon Ball Kai is toned down from what is present on the Dragon Ball Z footage. Also, being 'refreshed' the colors are different from what they are on the source footage.

A lot of the filler affects the story adapted from the comic, so clean-cutting it out won't work, which means more material that has to be explained, unless you want the product to flow as terriblely. For ninety-nine episodes there is some reservation warranted, but I highly doubt they won't cover the entire series. We really can't know until we're there (stuff happens mid-production), but right now it is looking like the entire series will be covered in 99 episodes.

Okay, now I can comfortably call this good news since they're evidently fixing the weakest part of Funi's DBZ dub, namely the "season 3" content. I'm probably in for this release. Although, I think I'd like to hear a bit of it first.

*sigh*

Civility, please. I'll intervene if I see more of this "childish" caricature. If the subject can't be talked about with respect then it's not going to be talked about.

I never bought any of the DVD boxsets of Z, so I'm going to buy Kai. It may be censored, but I won't have to worry about 5 minutes before Namek blowing up...10 episodes later.

Had a feeling Kai was coming sooner or later just thought it woud take longer. I might get this but Kai never impressed me anyway unless theres a brand new dub that fixes everything the old dubb messed up I'm not going to bother with it. Besides Dragonbox is better anyway. I want a real fourth series or at least go back to Dragonball and reanimate the thing from the start.

Personally, I'd be fine with FUNi keeping most of the main cast as is, with the only exception being to change Frieza's VA, wihch FUNi really downright NEERAB to do in order for people like me to take this English dub much more seriously. It'd also be nice if they could recast some of the minor characters who had annoying voices in the original dub of DBZ, or simply just make them sound less annoying in this dub, but, other than that, I'm pretty much fine with the rest of the cast for DBZ being kept the same for the English dub. Just about all of the VAs have improved A LOT since the original dub, so I'm sure that they can now do this particular itteration of the Dragon Ball series justice (or at least make up for their screw-up with their original dub of DBZ, if nothing else).
