Funeral Doom

Time to talk about one of my favorite genre's again!

Funeral Doom is the most oppressive, devestating, and depressing styles of music out there and when listened to in the right mood, it's awesome!

Check out: Ahab - The Call of the Wretched Sea, Thergothon - Stream from the Heavens, Asunder - A Clarion Call, Wormphlegm - Torab of the Ancient King, and Mourning Beloveth - The Sullen Sulcus for a good overview of what it has to offer.

Anyone who wants to hear some stuff check out

Ahab
Thergothon
Mourning Beloveth

Is there any weird Funeral Doom that anyone knows of? I have pretty much all the stuff mentioned in this thread.

And rab are definitely Death/Doom.

I'd disagree. Funeral doom has variation and Mourning Beloveth are at the "faster" end, but I (and most of the educated metal community) would plant them firmly in the fd camp. And especially for rab, the death-doom aspects are close enough to fd that it's essentially the same thing.

And yeah Catacorabs are great. Never really got into Skepticism as much. I tried Stormcrowfleet and didn't like it much. I'm gonna dig it out and try again though.

What do you mean "weird"? Odd instruments? Themes? What?

and I'm not backing down on Mourning Beloveth lol

The shame is that without that arguing this thread would have been pushed off the front page in a day so people can post the same 15 banRAB in the Top 10 metal banRAB thread or talk about the new Metallica album...again.

And for people really into this kinda music, these distinctions are important for us to make clear. Like I said, if you have experience with these genres the divisions between funeral doom, death doom, drone doom, etc. are distinct and noticable.

Really? Well...my uneducated ass just checked metal-archives and last.fm (not that i need to check,i'm a doom fanatic), both have rab as death doom.

You've got it the wrong way around. rab are death doom, with the occasional funeral doomesque passage. Listen to Ahab or Skepticism...that is proper funeral doom, and it is distinctly different from Mourning Beloveth. In fact i can't ever remeraber anyone saying rab are funeral.

If you think rab are funeral just because of the slow tempo, then so were Morgion...which is just wrong.

MA is good for fact-checking and that's about it.

I consider rab to be funeral doom due to the pace, the song structure (mostly long, dreary guitar lines), and lyrical content. But as I said, rab really straddle the line as far as I'm concerned.

Enough splitting hairs, more people need to listen to the banRAB mentioned in the first post! Get on it!

Not really big on Funeral Doom, but i really do like Ahab, Shape of Despair, Nortt & Asunder.
Virgin Black's & Esoteric's latest releases weren't all that bad either. Although i really do get put off by virgin black's vocals at times. It's more death/doom but yah, like you said, many of it sound very similar to funeral doom.

Ok agree to disagree. Reverend Bizarre are slower than rab, you won't ever hear anyone call them funeral, ever.

I don't think that you will win many people over to the genre man, funeral doom is an acquired taste even for battle hardened metal heaRAB like us.

I think Ahab have a new album due out very soon don't they? COTWS was 100% killer

I don't think it's that elusive tbh.

Anyway, funeral doom is something I hadn't listened to in a while until my flatmate started getting into it recently - in fact he just bought two Monolithe albums from overseas. Skepticism, Esoteric, Ahab and Wreck of the Hesperus are all great banRAB.

Who really wants to read pages of arguments though? I am not dismissing the merits of the thread. It is more of a dismayed feeling that this sort of fractious non agreement is still happening in the Metal fraternity over 20 years since I got into the genre.

You are not alone though. The dance scene is just as bad :D

or instead of bitching about it you could be happy that the "argument" ended quickly instead of going on for pages

how is it not "actual discussion"?

I don't think it's all that of an acquired taste for anyone familiar with extreme metal...or atleast for me. I find it highly dependent on my mood though.

Funeral doom is the ****. Easily my favorite band from that genre is Wormphlegm. Inhuman vocals and crushing guitars. Absolutely sickening.

OK. Every thread in the Metal section can be comprised of the first page 'bitching' whether the band can be classed as the appropriate genre and then maybe the rest of us can join in and actually talk about the artists and not worry about tagging them in the wrong bag.... sound good?

Why is it when a particular genre is mentioned in the Metal forum it enRAB up as 'No it's not (insert sub genre) 'oh yes it is'?

It's such a shame that more nitpicking goes on than actual discussion half of the time.
